Welcome home Chibi Moonah 🤩 (2/35). She’s one of the limited edition art merch pieces from @sadiahcurates cool new initiative @themuseis__ , produced in close collaboration with contemporary artists such as Indonesian artist @alfiah.rahdini whose work you might know from the ‘De grote Indonesië tentoonstelling’ in De Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam (okt 23 - apr 24).

In September 2023 @noelvanbemmel interviewed Alfiah Rahdini for Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant and returned home impressed, which intrigued me, so I was pleased to meet Alfiah a few months later during her artist residency @nuanucreativecity in Bali. We talked a lot, she is such a nice and approachable human being. I also like her work: it is powerful, meaningful and important, and in my humble opinion deserves a global stage. More than anything I admire Alfiah’s courage -as an Indonesian woman from a Muslim background- to question and speak out.

At a cosplay event in our neighbourhood mall @livingworld_denpasar, I noticed how many participants had chosen to impersonate a character I didn’t recognise, a girl in a very short blue skirt with two extremely long blonde ponytails.
I later discovered this was a very popular manga character and childhood super-heroin of many Asian girls, famous for her catchphrase “I am Sailor Moon! I stand for love and justice. In the name of the moon, I will punish you!”.

In her work, Alfiah provided the icon of her childhood with a new, even more powerful message. Her Sailor Moonah triggered a lot of attention and controversy. The artist Alfiah Rahdini became something of an icon herself. Over the years, Sailor Moonah has evolved and grown, but the message never changed and remains powerful as ever. In Bali, the divine is a part of daily life in many ways. Today for example, the Balinese celebrate Tumpek Landep,
traditionally for the blessing of sacred objects, heirlooms and all things metal.
Nowadays, they also bless things that make life easier and more convenient, like motorcycles, cars, bicycles, factory and household machines. What a gentle, graceful and fun way of blessing and celebrating! RESPECT 🙏🏼

Many Balinese elementary schools offer traditional Balinese dancing as an extra curricular activity. These girls, performing in their local Pura, are 6 to 9 years old and already amazing dancers! Watch the little ones mimicking the older ones, they’re so cute… Also the gamelan orchestra, all teenage boys plus one really cool girl, clearly had loads of fun performing for their home crowd!

Pantai Saba, a unique beach on Bali’s east coast, with sparkling black lava sand, crowded with local families on the weekend. A fast running small river runs through it.
