Graduation day came and went, and before I shared anything, I found myself sitting with a different kind of pride.

Not the kind measured by awards, honors, or cords.

The kind that comes from reflecting on what this milestone truly represents.

Congratulations to every student who earned honors, awards, and cords. Those achievements deserve to be celebrated.

But today, I also want to celebrate the students whose journeys looked different—the ones who struggled, doubted themselves, never received an award or cord, and still kept showing up.

Today, I’m celebrating my daughter.

Not because she was an honors student.

Not because she received an award.

But because she kept going, even when things felt hard. Because she showed courage, perseverance, and strength in moments no one else could see.

I watched her face challenges and still refuse to give up.

The other day she asked me,

“Mom, did the school call you? All my friends are getting awards.”

I looked at her and said:

“Baby, a letter does NOT define you.

A grade does not define who you are or what you are capable of accomplishing.”

Because I’ve seen the work behind the scenes—the frustration, self-doubt, and determination to keep going.

The world celebrates results.

I celebrate resilience.

Today, my daughter promoted from junior high, and I couldn’t be more proud.

Not because of what she earned.

But because of everything she overcame to get here.

And then Mr. Adame said something that perfectly captured what I hope she remembers:

“You hold the pen.”

Not your grades.

Not your report card.

Not anyone else’s expectations.

You.

You hold the pen to your story.

And if there’s one thing I know about this girl, it’s that her best chapters haven’t been written yet.

Congratulations, Yaretzi. 🤍

And to every student who crossed that stage—whether you wore a cord or not—be proud of how far you’ve come.

Keep writing your story. ✨
