happy halloween. what does classism have to do with witches, and would you believe me if i said you live by witches’ rules? for most of english history, poor villagers survived on wages and their rights to the common. grazing, firewood, gleaning. then landlords fenced it off and the people who couldn’t work were left relying on their neighbours. that is where the old woman at the edge of the woods comes from. she knocks on doors asking for milk or pins, someone says no, a cow gets sick, and she gets the blame. ten people were hanged at the pendle trials in 1612. and we still live by what she left us. the days of the week, easter, the may bank holiday, trick or treating, even foxglove in heart medicine. a doctor got the credit and we don’t know her name. so next time someone tells you witches are bad, remember who wrote that story. #witchtok #halloween #classism #ukhistory #ukpolitics by @imogenlysandrou
tomorrow is the day. do not shop at supermarkets. the government is allowing supermarkets to profit off a food crisis while one of the biggest surges in food prices is still coming. price caps on essential food now #boycott #werenotbuyingit #ukpolitics #costoflivingcrisis #pricecaps by @imogenlysandrou
munya chawawa said he saw more racism in a few weeks in chichester than in his whole life. i was born in chichester and i am not remotely surprised but i am worried. before a show on the 13th of october, a cast member was followed through the city centre and abused. sussex police are treating it as a homophobic hate crime. munya says that was the tip of the iceberg. the lib dem mp said she was shocked because it does not reflect the chichester she knows. i cannot imagine why a cis, white, middle class woman would have any reason to know anything else. that response evades responsibility entirely. chichester festival theatre has a reputation as a red flag venue for actors and crew. that is not new. and the economic consequences of ignoring this are real. the theatre generates over £25 million of economic activity in the district and supports 486 jobs. actors talk. their friends talk. their followers listen. i would not blame anyone who decided not to work, perform or spend a weekend here after hearing this. people are sleepwalking into fascism and a lot of them do not know it because it is being fed to them by algorithms funded by billionaires who do very well when working people are busy blaming each other instead of them. we have to do better #chichester #ukpolitics #antifascism #lgbtqrights #westsussex by @imogenlysandrou
my friend @amethystmusicc is an independent jazz, soul and r&b singer songwriter and she is raising funds for her next ep because the music industry does not make it easy. donate over £50 and you get a vinyl. i have no doubt she is going to achieve everything she is working towards. gofundme link is in my linktree #supportindependentartists #jazz #soul #vinyltiktok #gofundme by @imogenlysandrou

why do people boycott for 24 hours? a 24 hour consumer boycott, or “economic blackout”, is a show of numbers. it’s an easy first step for people who can’t strike or walk out of their job. it names actual companies instead of “the system”. and it’s a warning shot. if we can switch our spending off for a day, we can do it for a week. #Boycott #UKPolitics #PoliticsTok #WorkingClass #CostOfLiving by @imogenlysandrou
on the 28th of october, budget day, there is a supermarket boycott organised by @werenotbuyingit.uk just 24 hours, do not shop at supermarkets. uk supermarkets are making record profits while 1 in 8 households are food insecure. that is 6.5 million adults and 2.2 million children. 39% of households say food is harder to afford than last year and 41% say they worry about affording next month. the least we can do is one day #boycott #costoflivingcrisis #ukpolitics #werenotbuyingit #foodinsecurity by @imogenlysandrou
sometimes i scroll and feel a bit shit that i’m not getting PR boxes or invited to launches every other week. then i actually look at the last year or so. labour’s marketing team asked me to make political content for them, despite me very much not agreeing with labour. i’ve been invited to screenings on things that genuinely moved me. academics and activists i’ve read for years have sent me their books. a radio show asked me on to talk politics, and they cared about keeping debate civil and grounded in fact. creators i love have referenced my work. people have come up to me to say they like what i do. i’ve even been asked onto podcasts! PR is about being sellable. this is about being trusted + i know which one i’d rather have. #ContentCreator #SmallCreator #CreatorLife #PoliticsTok #UKPolitics by @imogenlysandrou
we say girls mature faster than boys like it’s a compliment. then we use it to hold them to a higher standard instead of handing them any actual power. girls start puberty earlier, and their brains start streamlining sooner. but a norwegian study found earlier puberty only explains about 8% of why girls get better grades than boys. the rest looks a lot more like what we expect from them. sit still, read the room, look after everyone. + that expectation doesn’t stop at school. it turns into the mental load. the bills, the washing, the food shop, the life admin. running a household without ever being called the head of it. i’m curious whether people think boys would step up if we actually expected them to. #Feminism #GenderEquality #MentalLoad #WomenInLeadership #Psychology by @imogenlysandrou
90 years since the battle of cable street. mosley’s blackshirts tried to march through the jewish east end, the state cleared the way for them, and the community said no anyway. worth remembering that the people at the barricades weren’t one neat group. they were jewish families, irish dockers, communists, trade unionists. they didn’t agree on much but they did agreed on fascism being wrong. @unitetheunion are hosting a gig tomorrow to mark it, with all proceeds go to striking workers. #CableStreet #AntiFascism #UKPolitics #LondonHistory #TradeUnions by @imogenlysandrou
