STAYING POWER

In June 2019, I sat in my final interview for my job at Southland. After some small talk, one of the interviewers asked me: “If you get this job, how long would you plan stay?”

Honestly, I wasn’t prepared to answer. So I paused, threw together some thoughts, and replied: “I’m not sure. But if God allows it, I’d like to see a class of students from 6th grade all the way through senior year.”

This month marks 7 years from that interview. And now the weird 6th graders that I started with are now slightly-less-weird graduating seniors. God allowed it, after all. And thank goodness!

I’ve heard it said that there are 3 keys to pleasing God. First— whoever you may be, always have God before your eyes. Second— whatever you do, do it according to the Holy Scriptures. And third— in whatever place you live, do not easily leave it.

I think I’m just starting to understand that third one.

The dreams I used to have of moving all over the world have turned into dreams of staying put. Why? Because staying has power. There are some things we can only see, some Kingdom perspectives we only get, when we choose to stay even when it’s easier to leave.

At least, I think…

These days, 7 years doesn’t seem like nearly as many as it used to. I suspect (and I hope) that I have much more to learn for as long as God continues to allow me to stay.

That said, here’s 7 pictures that capture a small piece of the last 7 years of work! by @impetersohn

4 things I’ve learned in 4 years being married to Alex:
1. Listening to spontaneous worship, Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, and Ben Rector in the same day isn’t chaotic, it’s called ~range~
2. Upside down cups on the floor usually have spiders underneath them and should be picked up with caution
3. “British Kids Try…” on YouTube is high class entertainment for the end of a long day
4. There is no such thing as having too many coffee cups

What a treat it is to be married to @alexfranckesohn. 4 years down, so many more to go! taken in Wellington Park by @impetersohn

UNSEEN HOURS

Picture #1 is what we see. It’s the Easter story lived out in front of our own eyes. It’s ONE MORE entering into the Kingdom of God. We clap and cheer and get teary eyed all at the same time. It’s powerful, it’s glorious, and heaven rejoices!

Picture #2 is what we don’t see. It’s unsightly and doesn’t look great on camera. It’s washing and folding piles of towels for 2 days straight. It’s asking a friend “would you want to come to church with me?”. It’s quiet prayers prayed by teams before anyone steps foot in a building. It’s people doing messy jobs where cameras don’t ever get pointed. They’re UNSEEN HOURS. And they’re powerful, they’re glorious, and heaven rejoices!

We can look for it in the seen, but character and grit are really only played out in the UNSEEN. So, praise God for Jesus— who served, sacrificed, and suffered in the unseen hours of the garden and all the way to the cross. He is Risen! by @impetersohn

2025 RECAP
1. Alex is the life of the party. And watch out world— the Sohn’s are taking dance lessons. In 2026, we’re going to be moving different!
2. In January, my grandfather, passed away, but it wasn’t until summer that we got to gather as a family to mourn and celebrate him together. His niche in the columbarium has grape vines etched onto it. A fitting way to remember Papa!
3. Repped team Arbor Day for one last time.
4. Birthday cake courtesy of Alex and @katesaunders14 Saunders at their own wedding
5. A bear climbed on my car.
6. Alex became the most well educated person in our family!
7. Wrapped us 6 years working with middle schoolers at Southland, the last 2 alongside this team!
8. Spent Thursday nights being challenged by our community.
9. Finally got back to Cape Town to see our long lost friends!!
10. Anchored Down in Tampa to celebrate the greatest year in Vanderbilt football history with the fam! by @impetersohn

As a few of my favorite students reminded me with a birthday card from this summer, I just wrapped up my 3rd year on staff @southlandcc . I’m not always great at reflection, but I wanted to take a second to share 3 things I’ve learned in my first 3 years in ministry.

#1: Middle schoolers rock. I’m convinced more and more that if Jesus was here today he would spend some of his time with middle schoolers. Middle schoolers are humble, sincere, ready to learn, and are taking ground for the Kingdom now. I LOVE our students. It’s bittersweet to see students who were 6th graders when I started head up to high school, but I’m so excited to see God working in the lives of our students in year 4.

#2: WHAT you do might not matter as much as WHO you do it with. I love my team. Whether it’s Southland Students, our campus, or our church as a whole, I LOVE my team. Some of the sharpest, most hard-working, and humble people I’ve met in my life are in ministry. I work with architects, engineers, accountants, musicians, salesman, teachers, and more. It’s not our abilities that have brought us together, it’s our availability to what God has called us to do.

#3: From Psalm 90, and as I was reminded by my good friend Gordon earlier this year, “teach me to number my days”. Good things and good people come and go quick. Some of my most favorite seasons over the last 3 years have been the shortest. My job isn’t to chase consistency, but to stay in touch with where God is leading me. So I number my days, both good and bad, because change is here to stay. by @impetersohn

Almost 6 years ago I fell in love with 2 things just steps from where this picture was taken. The first was Adirondack chairs. Good gravy, they are comfortable. The second was Alex Francke.

We would sit outside of her dorm for hours on end talking about whatever came to mind. She was kind, loving, overflowing with joy, and she was definitely going to get me an A in our fall semester theater class.

Luckily, our conversation last night was a bit shorter than the long chats we had back in the day. It was just a few tears, a quick question, and a pretty excited “yes”.

I love ya, bean.

PS - if you knew the secret this past week(s) and kept it, THANK YOU. If you helped make the plan or make the surprise happen, THANK YOU (you know who you are). If you’ve loved and supported and encouraged Alex and I at any point in the last 6 years THANK YOU. We love you guys! taken in Lewis Honors College by @impetersohn
