We’re excited to see you there ☀️ RSVP through the link in our bio __________________________________Moderated by writer, critic, and curator Seph Rodney, the conversation centers around the way in which Webster’s work invokes one of the central dynamics of not only human life, but general life: all life in the known universe is marked by entropy; a gradual decline into disorder. All life is also constantly appearing, proliferating, and evolving. These forces of seemingly equal potency are oppositional and exist in tension, driving toward rival goals. It’s that drive in antipodean directions that in part makes the work enthralling. It is both reminiscent of life itself and reminiscent of what makes it so agonizing at times — that it must also witness its own winter.Doors will open at 6pm, and the conversation will begin by 6:30pm. My friends, fam, and Asian art scholars & enthusiasts, we need you to join!!!!— It’s really chill and unscripted but here’s the blurb:Contemporary art often arrives trailing language behind it: press releases, wall texts, exhibition essays, and reviews. For artists working across Asia and its diasporas, this act of interpretation carries a set of questions: How much context is necessary for a work to be understood? At what point does contextualization become reduction? Who assumes the role of providing context, and what can remain unexplained?On the occasion of Alisan Fine Arts’ 45th anniversary show, “Home and Abroad,” Richard Vine, former managing editor of Art in America, and Jenny Wang, editor-in-chief of IMPULSE Magazine, will lead an intimate roundtable discussion investigating the politics and generative possibilities of writing about Asian art in a transnational context. All life is also constantly appearing, proliferating, and evolving. These seemingly equal and opposing forces exist in tension, driving toward rival ends. It is that pull in opposite directions that, in part, makes the work so enthralling, as it’s both reminiscent of life itself and of what makes life so agonizing at times—that it must also witness its own winter. Yet the works are also impossibly clean, managed, kept, and guarded.
