Kompakt, Cologne.

First weekend of the year, every year. Jonathan Kaspar all night long. Before the event I always spend an afternoon in the shop digging vinyl.
I pick it up, read the sleeve, put it on. Then I listen. Properly.

Every record in my collection has a story. I know where I found most of them or who I got it from.
This summer we did a small vinyl-only meet-up during the Gentse Feesten. Now we go all the way: the last From Dusk Till Dawn of the year is vinyl only.

90% of the people I still hang out with, I met on a dancefloor.

Not because the dancefloor made us friends. It filtered us.

Same taste in music, same energy on a random Saturday out, same reason for being there at 3am. That’s enough to notice someone.

The actual friendship happens after. Outside of it. A coffee, a project, a brainstorm, a trip, just showing up for each other’s stuff and supporting each other.

That’s the part I feel people miss when they think or talk about community. The dancefloor isn’t the community. It’s where you find your people. What you build with them after is the real thing.

Almost 4 years into FDTD, that’s still what I’m most proud of. Not the numbers. The amount of people who found each other there and kept going.

Danced days and nights with old friends.
Met new ones somewhere between the stages.

No judgement. No pretending. Everyone free to be exactly who they are.

Some organise, some play, some dance, some simply show up. Everyone adds something.

And somehow it all works.

The people, the place, the curation and the freedom to discover.

Fuck the algorithm.
Go find some music & real connection!

Not my festival this time. Just one of the helping hands.

Spent the hottest week of the year building up & breaking down other people’s festivals. Carrying cases, doing what the production lead says, soaked by 9am šŸ„µšŸ˜…. Something breaks every hour out there and nobody panics. People just figure out the next move & keep on going. That’s the part I love!

Running my own events most of the year, so stepping back into the boots is the best reset there is.

One of my favourite moments from this year’s Open Air.

During the festival, we brought together a group of people from across the event industry for an informal meetup.

Promoters, suppliers, artists, freelancers, venue operators and organisers.

No agenda.

Just good conversations.

I’ve always believed our industry becomes stronger when people share knowledge, help each other and open doors for one another.

Building events is hard enough already.

Let’s do more of that šŸ¤ taken in Park van Beervelde by @impus._

For most people, it was one day.

For us, it was a year.

Not a year of ā€œhard workā€.

A year of random things that somehow ended up becoming a festival.

Promo tours.
Driving across the country for meetings.
Choosing colours for fabrics people would only see for a few hours.
Putting together artist gifts.
Walking through the park for the hundredth time.
Building in the rain.
Breaking down in the rain.

Most of it never makes it to social media.

And that’s okay.

Because nobody buys a ticket for the preparation.

They come for the music, the people and the feeling of being part of something.

Looking back at these pictures, it’s funny how much of the story happens before the first visitor even walks through the gate.

From booking artists to driving forklifts.

Last week, Lothar, Filip and I got our forklift, telehandler and aerial work platform licenses.

Not exactly the most glamorous part of organizing festivals šŸ˜„

But as our events continue to grow, so do the responsibilities that come with them.

More production.
More safety.
More regulations.
More things to learn.

So we figured we’d better get certified.

Why would people trust an event that books artists they don’t even know?

That’s a question I ask myself a lot.

After the Open Air, we asked our visitors how they felt about discovering artists and sounds they didn’t know before.

Almost everyone answered positively.

And honestly… that means more to me than any sales number ever could.

Because From Dusk Till Dawn was never built around hype.

It was built around discovery.

Discovery of music.
Discovery of artists.
Discovery of people.
Discovery of moments you didn’t expect.

Somewhere along the way, a big part of the scene became focused on predictability.

For us, it’s always been the opposite.

Taking risks on artists people might not know yet.
Creating moments where strangers become friends.
Building dancefloors around feeling instead of familiarity.

ā€œVibe over hypeā€ has become a bit of a cliché sentence for us by now.

But honestly… it’s still exactly how we think.

And seeing people embrace that at the Open Air gave me even more belief in where we’re going.

I still don’t really know what to say.

For the past few days I’ve been trying to find the right words, but honestly… I still can’t fully process what happened.

A year ago I decided to go all in on From Dusk Till Dawn.

There were moments where it felt exciting.
There were moments where it felt terrifying.

Questions. Doubts. Sleepless nights.
Highs and lows.

And then suddenly you’re standing there, looking at thousands of people dancing in a park that was completely empty just days before.

That feeling is hard to describe.

More than anything, I’m grateful.

Grateful for every single person who bought a ticket and believed in what we’re building.

Grateful for our team, who spent countless hours turning ideas into reality.

Grateful for our community, my team, helpers, partners, suppliers, artists and everyone who helped shape this edition.

The truth is that there are too many people to name without forgetting someone.

Over the past days I’ve received hundreds of messages. I haven’t managed to reply to all of them yet, but I will.

Reading messages from artists like Frankey & Sandrino, artists I’ve looked up to for years and always dreamed of booking one day, means more than I can explain.

At the end of the day, everything we do comes from a simple place:

A love for music.
A love for bringing people together.
And the hope of creating moments that people will remember long after the music stops.

Thank you for trusting us.

We’ll let this sink in first.

Then we’ll start dreaming again.

Life lately.

Somewhere between production stress, meetings, decor runs, music, radio, family time and trying to turn an empty park into something special.
