Not to be dramatic but a post mortem might be the most important thing you do after you finish your film.Every major production does one. It’s how they get better. It’s how they don’t repeat the same expensive mistakes twice.Most indie filmmakers wrap, collapse, and move on. No documentation. Are you ready to walk away from the film industry all together? It seems as if it has left us behind. Everyone is talking about the great millennial career crises but it affects filmmakers differently. We can’t just pivot to a new career without losing a part of ourselves. You are not alone. 4 years ago I thought I had reached the peak and it was only up from there. I was at the big events meeting all the big people. And then two years later I was dealing with the fallout of COVID, the strikes, 🤖, the fires, and was being wrapped from my work early. If you are ready to quit. I understand. But I want to say there is another way. I remember being in this moment the awe and wonder meeting the head of Netflix and thinking how I had made it. I got to meet some really incredible people that night. But looking back at my career I realized that I got into filmmaking to tell impactful stories with people I cared about and those of you who care about the art and craft of filmmaking. You are meant for more than what this industry has given you. There is a better way. You are the reason I am chasing down all my fears and putting myself out there. Because this is scary. But there are so many incredible indie filmmakers who have not gotten their chance to shine because they were never given the tools to do so. Trying again. Getting back up again feels impossible. And the having to also think about building an audience is almost more impossible.I’m reflecting on this day when I was getting ready for this big red carpet event and I must have tried on 20-30 dresses (I don’t think it was quite 50 🤪) and this is what it feels like now. To put yourself out there push past fear and to try things. Some might not work. But then that one thing will just fit like a glove and you’ll just “know” We have more to say. There are stories that only we can tell. So I’m going to be showing up to help shed light on the intricacies of post production and share the insider knowledge no one was ever taught in film school. Not to be dramatic but…everyone is talking about the millennial career crisis yet no one is talking about what it has done to an entire generation of filmmakers.Millennials were told to go to film school. Get the degree. Pay your dues. Be the best. Wait for someone to give you permission to make your film.And while they were waiting, Gen Z showed up and just started making things.They didn’t wait for permission. They built audiences before they had budgets. They distributed films before they had agents. They made the thing and put it out there. Millennials got sold a path that no longer exists. And a lot of us are still standing at a door that was never going to open for us. The good news is the door was never the point.The film was. So let’s stop waiting to make our films and just get out there and start doing the thing. Hollywood’a big secret is they plan their post as carefully as they plan production. That’s not a budget difference 〰️ it’s a knowledge gap. Film school never taught you how to properly plan post. And it’s exactly what creates the Vision Gap between the film you imagined and the film that actually gets finished.You don’t need a studio budget to close that gap. Filmmakers - If you struggle with the 180 axis let me show you a better way of thinking about it. Watching Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting a couple days ago and I saw this perfect example of how to use actor placement and camera movement to avoid jarring spatial reference in the edit. by @imshawnacarroll

Not to be dramatic but we do not talk enough about the shame indie filmmakers feel when things don’t go according to plan. I think a lot of times our ability doesn’t always match our circumstances.I’ve had my film in the can for over a year and my life circumstances have absolutely bulldozed me from being able to focus on it like I’ve wanted to. The shame is real. You’re not alone. Please let me know if a small win you can celebrate now and remind yourself that progress is still progress even if it takes longer than you wanted. Oscars, Emmys, and Golden Globes…oh my! 😱These awards do not mean what many indie filmmakers think they do. You do not want to win an Oscar, truly. Working with Queen Latifah, Brie Larson, Oprah Winfrey, Issa Rae I could go on…was at more fulfilling to me than saying yes to working on The Bear. I have spoken to those on the show and it was a 🐻 to work on (pardon my pun 😜) So if you’re chasing a big break or accolades from awards you should stop to ask why.
