Not all olive oils are created equal. And some? Well, let’s just say they’re giving imposter.

Olive oil can be SO good for you, but here’s what to look for when you’re shopping for the real deal.

HOW TO SPOT REAL OLIVE OIL:

* Extra virgin is the gold standard. Look for extra virgin olive oil, not just “olive oil” on the label.
* Check the harvest date. Fresher is better! Olive oil loses its beneficial compounds over time.
* Look for dark glass or a tin. Light and heat can degrade the quality of the oil.
* Know where it comes from. Look for a clearly identified origin, not vague labeling that leaves you guessing.
* Price matters. Quality olive oil takes time, care, and money to produce. If it seems suspiciously cheap, look closer.
* Look for independent certifications. Third-party quality testing can offer extra reassurance. No single label guarantees everything, so do your homework.

And here’s something I wish more people knew: olive oil isn’t just about healthy fats. High-quality extra virgin olive oil also contains naturally occurring polyphenols, including hydroxytyrosol, which help protect against oxidative stress.

This is why I’m picky about the olive oil I use, and why I don’t just grab whatever bottle is on sale.
