Kgothatso Phiri’s collection steps into a space where child-like curiosity disrupts the rigidity of uniform. Rooted in imagination rather than rules, the work questions the social importance of structure and explores how playful exploration can dismantle the codes we attach to classic garments. Techniques like origami are used to push and fiddle with familiar forms, reshaping them until something entirely new emerges. Developed as part of coursework at STADIO, the collection reflects an ongoing investigation into uniform, structure, and the limitless possibilities found within curiosity.

This concept is a reflection of how I see culture right now, bold, expressive, layered, and constantly evolving.
I’m building a visual library of the new symbols of heritage through my lens, one frame at a time.
Honoured to explore this with @canonrsa

CURIOSITY DIDN’T OFF THIS CAT.

WORDS ON DESIGN, CURIOSITY, UNIFORM, IMAGINATION AND EXPLORATION @iconnermagazinee

“The collection suggests that growing older does not necessarily mean abandoning curiosity. In fact, curiosity can become even more meaningful once we understand the world we are questioning.” by @inapileofclothes

At its core, this investigation explores child-like imagination as a survival mechanism, with curiosity as the leading design approach. It is a follow-up to my first collection, which investigated curiosity and unhinged, child-like imagination.
The project begins with the belief that the world is highly structured, demanding, and often difficult to process. Society creates systems, expectations, uniforms, rules, and definitions of success that people are expected to accept and navigate. Against this backdrop, the work asks:

What happens when curiosity, play, and child-like imagination are used as tools to confront these realities?

The visual language does not propose imagination as an escape from reality, but rather as a way of engaging with it. The child-like perspective becomes a method of questioning, dismantling, and reinterpreting structures that have become normalised. Through play, the project attempts to loosen the rigidity of societal expectations while further exploring techniques such as origami to aid in this exploration of curiosity and child-like imagination. This attempts to uncover alternative ways of understanding the world.

A recurring tension exists throughout the design process: the conflict between innocence and awareness, represented through the process of making the origami flowers and exploring office uniforms. The work acknowledges the complexities, contradictions, and disappointments of the world. This is imagination that exists after exposure to reality. The result is a form of play that feels slightly unsettling, exaggerated, and, at times, unhinged.

The deep exploration of curiosity further aims to dismantle objects as we rework familiar garments, rearranging meaning and allowing imagination and play to take the front seat.

Imagination and curiosity are not an escape from reality. They are tools for understanding it. The design language proposes that when the world becomes too complex to neatly explain, imagination can become a form of armour, resistance, and meaning-making. It is the act of remaining curious in a world that often demands certainty. by @inapileofclothes
