Imagine building a world model of Jonah Lomu’s 1995 Rugby World Cup. Simulating it is different from the 1997 PlayStation game based on that tournament. The game had coded rules, fixed outcomes and Jonah’s own licence on the box. A world model has a different objective: simulating possibilities around the player and the tournament as it was remembered. And that capability matters beyond nostalgia.

World models could transform coaching, sports medicine, and sports science. Learning how a body like Jonah’s actually moved, fatigued, and recovered could help protect the next generation of players, not just entertain us.

But none of it is legitimate without consent from the player, the estate, and the communities that shaped him and without governance grounding the build from the start: who licensed the footage, who holds the model, who labels the simulation as simulation. The 1997 game asked Jonah first. A world model must clear that same bar, and higher.

Cultural capital is not just art, music, fashion, language, sport, or style.
It is the value communities carry through memory, struggle, creativity, and influence.

That is why the Knicks win feels bigger than basketball.

New York has shaped so much of the world culturally, often without the full acknowledgment it deserves. Its style has been copied, its language borrowed, its struggle commercialised, and its creativity extracted.

So when the Knicks win, it feels like more than an NBA moment.

It feels like a boost to a city’s spirit. They’ve often been the most extracted population in American culture.

A reminder that cultural capital does not only live in institutions, money, or titles. It lives in the people. In the streets. In the stories. In the way communities keep creating, even after being overlooked.

For Pacific communities, cultural capital has always existed in how we gather, share, teach, care, organise, and make meaning together.

The problem is, too often, that knowledge is extracted, translated into someone else’s framework, commercialised, and then presented back to us as innovation.

At Inati Labs, we see cultural capital as something to protect, grow, and return to the people it comes from.

Because our communities are not empty spaces waiting to be “upskilled.”

We are already full of knowledge.

The work is making sure emerging technology recognises that and it does not erase it.
