In Book 9 he gets a Cyclops blackout drunk on wine from Maron, a priest in Thrace, and Homer makes a point of telling us it had already been cut twenty parts water to one. Normal Greek practice was closer to three to one, because drinking it neat was something only barbarians did. Either Maron’s wine was liquid dynamite or Homer was doing what every wine person does when the bottle was really, really good.

Would you want to drink it today? Bronze Age wine came from grapes left to raisinate in the sun, so it was sweet and enormous in alcohol. It sat in clay sealed with pine resin, which is retsina before retsina had a name. It oxidized in storage because nobody had worked out how to stop that, so picture a rough Madeira that has seen some things.

Three thousand years later the instinct is unchanged. Wine is what you open when the journey is long and the gods are being difficult.

Ours requires considerably less water. And if you are planning your own screening at home, that runtime works out to roughly a bottle and a half. by @inbodega
