peachtober day #3: moose

”step dance”/”percussive dance” - dance styles focused on creating rhythmic beats via footwork

“appalachian flatfooting” - a solo percussive dance where the feet are kept close to the floor; primarily done to old-time music. shoes are commonly, though not exclusively, leather-soled.

“lancashire clogging” - a percussive dance originating from textile factories in northern england during the industrial revolution. the wood-soled shoes stem from the protective footwear worn by workers. most of the clog dances i know are in the style of pat tracey, a prolific performer and choreographer from lancashire; this year, we’re working on a dance in the style of anna marley, a strain of clog that immigrated to vaudeville.

anyway, as you can tell, drawing the new england old time flatfoot society guy as a moose was ultimately a tangential way for me to shoehorn in this infodump about percussive folkdance. thank you for coming to my ted talk.
