Love him or hate him… there’s something special about watching a musician in their element. Playing music outside the norm for Yeezy, he still manages to get the room BOUNCING! You can clearly see he’s completely “feeling the music”. Acclaimed Director and friend of Kanye [ @kanyewest ], Spike Lee [ @officialspikelee ], had a front row seat to the show that took place at a Sunday Service event hosted in Dayton.

🎥 NETFLIX MUSIC FILM PICKS 🍿

⭐️Are you looking for something to watch this weekend? Well, I got you covered! No need to finish your snacks before you make that precious pick.

⭐️I’ve been doing some SERIOUS netflixing lately. Primarily, an absolute deep dive into their ‘Music Films’ category. I thought why not share my favourite ones for you to enjoy as well?

🎦HERE ARE MY PICKS:

1) ‘If I Leave Here Tomorrow’ A Film About Lynyrd Skynyrd
➖Easily my favourite. It’s cool to see how much they accomplished. They really helped redefine the sound of the South. The thing I loved most though, was seeing that fun was always at the core of everything they did. I had the Street Survivors album on repeat for the rest of the week!

2) ‘Tricky Dick and The Man In Black’ - A Johnny Cash Story
➖I had always known Johnny Cash was passionate about peace and social justice, and that activism was an inherent part of what made him such an iconic artist. However, I had no idea how politically influential he was. You come away from the film with a greater sense of appreciation for his bravery.

3) ‘Inventing David Geffen’
➖David Geffen is at the centre of pop culture.

4) ‘Keith Richards: Under The Influence’
➖I was most impressed by his passion to keep learning and pushing the boundaries.

5) ‘Homecoming’ A Film By Beyonce
➖No one can do it like Beyonce! I loved the behind-the-scenes content most.

6. ‘The Defiant Ones’
➖The relationship Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre have is so inspiring to watch unfold.

7) ‘John & Yoko Above Us Only Sky’
➖A deeper look into their unique relationship.

8) ‘Who Shot The Sheriff? A Bob Marley Story’
➖I’ll watch anything about Bob Marley – always. It’s important to understand his message and you get to see an in-depth glance here.

9) ‘Biggie I Got A Story To Tell’
➖A story of rags to riches. It’s a film to celebrate all that he did for hip-hop.

I love uncovering new talent from around the world! Today, I want to talk about an act that I pretty well bumped all summer.

💥MEET: OLD MERVS @oldmervs_band

A two-man surf rock band from Great Southern, Western Australia. David House plays guitar and leads vocals, while Henry Carrington-Jones takes on drums and backing vocals.

🔹They are truly on the come up having only released singles so far but all impressive. What I immediately loved about Old Mervs is just how easy listening to their music is. David has such a strong, soothing, and distinctive voice. I’m a big fan of their songwriting skills too. I think there is a real art to writing a song that tells a story, serves a purpose/gets a point across well, all while sounding good and keeping you engaged. Old Mervs have figured out a magic formula!🔹

They have a song called, ‘Okay Mum’, which I find to be completely hilarious and infectious just the same. I jotted down some of the lyrics…

✏️“Hey Mum, I’m really hungry. Is there anything that maybe I could eat? Well, Davey. If you’re really that hungry, you can have a piece of fruit – FUCK THAT. You’re only hungry because you’re bored. Well, okay, mum. Go and have a glass of milk.”

It’s funny because it’s relatable, the relatability makes it memorable, and the memory is what gets you singing and bobbing along yourself.

🔹I like that they’re versatile. I’ll jump from that cut to my favourite track by them, a song called, ‘Cellphone’. It couldn’t be more opposite, either. It’s a beautiful song that (to me) seems to be written about a toxic relationship. Again, it’s real and relatable. It’s also straight-up – RAW. You sort of feel the “fuck you” in David’s voice. I can pretty well guarantee that if you give it a listen, you’ll be giving it a save too. I must be onto something with that because it’s currently the bands’ top track on Spotify with over 1.3 million streams and counting.🔹

While at it, check ‘Wait Around’. It’s a similar type of track and very much enjoyable in the same way. ‘Stick It Out’ is another top choice for me. I can’t wait for more!

Drake (@champagnepapi ) has been making headlines everywhere due to his decision to withdraw his nominations from this year's Grammy Awards. He was nominated in 2 categories: Best Rap Performance & Best Rap Album.

▫️The Recording Academy has nominated Drake 47 times over the years. Although, he has only officially won 4 times in total, all of which were in the rap genre category. His most recent win was at the 2019 Grammy Awards when he won Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan”.

▫️At the 2019 award show, after winning his Grammy, Drake made a speech that implied winning the award wasn’t the true tell tale of success within music.

Saying, “This is a business where sometimes it’s up to a bunch of people who might not understand what a mixed race kid from Canada has to say or a fly Spanish girl from New York or anybody else, or a brother from Houston right there, my brother Travis [Scott]. But my point is you’ve already won if you have people singing your songs word for word, if you’re a hero in your hometown. Look, if there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here. I promise you, you already won. But…”

BUT?! Well, that’s when the producers of the show decided to cut him off and head to commercials.

▫️The following year, when the Weeknd (@theweeknd ) was famously snubbed from any nominations at all, Drake called for the Grammys to be replaced with “something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come”. He then went on to post a statement to his Instagram page saying, “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones who come after.”

I think it’s pretty clear to everyone that the Grammys are just not cutting it anymore. If you want to see change happen, it typically needs to come from the top and Drake is undoubtedly at the top of the food chain within music.

💥Anyone who knows me best knows that psych rock has a special place in my heart. If I had to out right pick a favourite genre, it would definitely be my go to. With that being said, it is always extra special for me to uncover a cool new act within the genre.💥

LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO:
🇬🇧 CLUB KURU➖ @clubkuru ➖

A psych rock duo from London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 that puts (the right) modern twist on the rock you love from the 60s and 70s. Laurie Erskine leads vocals 🎤 and Laurence Hammerton takes guitar🎸.

▪️In 2018 they released their debut album, ‘Giving In’. A project which I believe provided an excellent introduction to the unique talent they so visibly exude.

⏯Here are my TOP TRACKS from ‘Giving In’:
1️⃣) I’m Still A Man
2️⃣) Is This My Life?
3️⃣) Giving In

The band showed no signs of slowing down, as they closely followed their debut album with a second release just a year later. In 2019, Club Kuru put out their second album, ‘Meet Your Maker’. The album quickly gained heavy rotation in my personal playlist and has actually become one of my overall favourites.

◾️I have great admiration for any band that can put out an album that holds my attention from front-to-back and ‘Meet Your Maker’ certainly does. During the midst of the pandemic, the album truly held the sounds that helped soothe my understanding of the world's disarray.◾️

⏯Here are my TOP TRACKS from ‘Meet Your Maker’:
1️⃣) Cherry Bloom
2️⃣) Lady Luck
3️⃣) 49 Years
4️⃣) Meet Your Maker
5️⃣) Film Credits
6️⃣) By the Windowpane

▪️I really hope you take the time to give the full album a listen. I think you might just see what I do and if you want to look a little further, check out their music videos. ‘Film Credits’ is a complete work of art. It is one of the more well thought out videos I have seen in some time and undoubtedly provides a deeper appreciation for the song itself.

🔺Club Kuru are one of those rare bands where a lackluster track is seemingly non-existent within their body of work. I really find them to be completely captivating and I hope you do too.🔻

🖤❤️In honour of my INDEE return, I thought I’d look back on some famous acts to have members quit the band and come back too.❤️🖤

No band is safe from facing these challenges! As you can see here, it really does happen to even the best of the best.

1️⃣) The Grateful Dead – Drummer Mickey Hart joined the dead in 1967 but left in 1971 due to conflicts between his father and the band’s management. Hart recorded a solo album during his time apart from the Dead, but rejoined in 1974 and remained in the band up until they officially disbanded in 1995.

2️⃣) The Beach Boys – Al Jardine (guitarist and vocalist) quit The Beach Boys for a year in 1962 and worked in the airline industry. Brian Wilson asked him to rejoin in 1963, and Jardine continued to be a touring member of the band up until 1998.

3️⃣) Van Halen – David Lee Roth was one of the founding members but in the midst of a 1984 tour, Roth left the band. Sammy Hagar was used as his replacement but Roth returned to the band in 1996. This didn’t last long and in 1997, Gary Cherone (lead singer of the band Extreme), joined the group. After taking a full hiatus from the public, both Hagar and Roth returned.

4️⃣) Pink Floyd – Richard Wright was fired by Roger Waters following The Wall sessions due to the pair’s rocky relationship. Though he wasn’t technically a full-time member, the management held on to Wright as a salaried session musician during their spectacular concerts so he was the only member of the band who profited from the tour. He rejoined for A Momentary Lapse Of Reason (released in 1987) after Waters quit the band.

🗯🤔QUESTION: Whose return was most vital❓

Hey there! 👋🏻You may have noticed that it’s been quite some time since I’ve used this page. Sometime recently, I recognized that I miss having a place to use my voice and create. I was enjoying this project but I felt like it lost its way… or maybe I did. Either way, I feel ready to revive it.

💢I love music. It has always inspired me. I also love creating, and I think music has been a space that has long inspired my creativity. Most of all, I love sharing what I learn/create with other people (like-minded or not) because it creates connectivity.

💢Music has connected me to so many wonderful people throughout my life and I am thankful for it. Old songs, new songs, etc. No matter the genre, either. There is so much to uncover within this art form and that is what fascinates me. I would like to move forward now by creatively propelling this. I want to create a space where people can learn and grow, maybe even share a laugh. All through the most beautiful way I have found humans to connect thus far -- through music!

💢I hope I can teach you something new about your favourite band. Maybe I can even help you find your new favourite band? Or let you know when a sweet one is headed on tour in your area? If you are working within the industry, maybe I can help to support you in some way. Let’s connect! Let me help you connect. Let’s work together to come together.

I will be getting back to all the unopened emails and DMs in the coming days!💌

Stay tuned to it all :)

Are you a fan of the TV show @friends ? Okay. Really, who isn’t⁉️

The sitcom was on the air from 1994-2004 but recently, ‘Friends: The Reunion’ was released on HBO Max.

🔹Phoebe Buffay, played by Lisa Kudrow is famously known for her comedic song “Smelly Cat”. The song was written by Friends writers along with musician Chrissie Hynde and Kudrow herself. Following its debut in the sixth episode of the second season, Kudrow frequently performed the song throughout the course of the show and it went on to play an integral role for her character.

🔸The song was so beloved by fans that they requested it be released as an album track! "Smelly Cat Medley" was eventually recorded by Kudrow and the Pretenders (credited as Phoebe Buffay and the Hairballs) for the soundtrack album ‘Friends Again’ (released in 1999).

🔹Over the years, many popular artists have covered the song and Kudrow even performed it LIVE on stage with Taylor Swift during the singer's 1989 World Tour in 2015. For the reunion special, Lady Gaga makes a special guest appearance and plays the song with Kudrow right where it all started… on the Central Perk set. You can tell that there is equal excitement between Lady Gaga and Lisa Kudrow in the clip, which only makes it that much more fun to watch!

It would seem that Elton John and Ed Sheeran are also big fans of the show, as they sat down with Courtney Cox to play “Tiny Dancer” during a press junket.

🔸Of course, “Smelly Cat” isn’t the only musical tie to the show. “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts is arguably the most popular television theme song of all time. The clapping was actually added to the track after the final mix and the song went straight to radio within a week of its release.

💡It’s cool to see just how much impact one song can have… even if it’s only a minute long. As the music industry continues to evolve, there is more and more of a focus towards getting your songs showcased within television and film projects. It provides a great additional revenue stream for musicians and even better - great exposure to your work overall.

◾️The Glorious Sons ❌ @theglorioussons ❌are hands down my favourite 🇨🇦Canadian act! They are a rock act from Kingston, Ontario. The band formed in 2011 and have since gone on to release an EP and three studio albums. I have gotten the opportunity to see this act live a number of times now. I swear, I have really grown alongside them too. All the shows that I have attended were at different stages in their career and even better, each show equally as great as the next. It is why they are my favourite Canadian act! The Glorious Sons are a band that you can count on to put on a great show - ALWAYS. I have seen them play small venues, all the way to watching them open for The Rolling Stones!

I promise you… these guys are the very definition of Rock N Roll. The music is great. The song writing is what captivates me personally, but the showmanship is like no other. You just never know what you're going to get from Brett Emmons (lead singer) when he walks on stage but you can guarantee that it won’t disappoint.◾️

♦️The band was forced to postpone their 2019 tour due to the pandemic but have just announced ‘The Unfinished Business Tour’, which offers a number of new tour dates in addition to their rescheduled shows.♦️

◾️What has caught my attention though, is how they have chosen to celebrate this announcement… with an additional release of 15 1 of 1 NFT offers. The Glorious Sons have animated and digitally crafted their tour posters in the way of NFT. Even more interesting to me, they have also decided to offer each winning bidder a ‘Seasons Pass’, which will grant these fans access to any show on the tour!◾️

🔺The Glorious Sons Discography:
🔻Shapeless Art - EP - 2013
🔻The Union - Album - 2014
🔻Young Beauties and Fools - Album - 2017
🔻A War on Everything - Album - 2019
🔻After the recent releases of two singles, ‘Daylight’ and ‘Young King’, it looks like a fourth album is soon on the way!

💥Be sure to check out the bands page to learn more and grab tickets to a show stop near you!💥
