📢 RBI hikes rates for the first time in 4 years; inflation fears bite amid global concerns

The Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee, led by Governor Sanjay Malhotra, unanimously decided to increase the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50%, from 5.25% 🏦

The decision comes amid rising inflation pressures and global uncertainty, including the ongoing West Asia conflict 🌍

Importantly, RBI changed its stance from neutral to calibrated tightening, implying that the next move is likely to be a pause or hike, while rate cuts are off the table for now.

Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated that the upward revision in the growth forecast reflects the strength of economic activity despite significant headwinds. Risks to the growth outlook remain evenly balanced.

What this signals 👇

• The rate increase reflects concern over rising inflation pressures.

• The higher FY27 GDP growth forecast points to continued strength in domestic economic activity.

• CPI inflation is projected to peak at 6.0% in Q3 FY27 and average approximately 5.8% across Q3 FY27, Q4 FY27 and Q1 FY28.
