Growing up with two very different parents, from very different cultures — emphasis on the ‘very’ — made for an interesting childhood.

When my dad fell in love with my mom, he also fell in love with her culture. The colors, flavors, textures, loudness, heat. Let’s be honest, Dutch culture might be lacking a few of those things. He was fascinated and enchanted by Hinduism, and it welcomed him with open arms. After he’s traveled the world as a photographer, India is still his favorite place on this planet. ❤️

My mom was equally accepting and appreciative of my dad’s mixed heritage. A Dutch mother and upbringing, and a very Brooklyn father with Italian-Catholic and Lithuanian-Jewish blood. My dad had grown up between two very distinct cultures and languages, like me.

I’m proud of my roots — the contradictions, messiness of clashing cultures, the flavors, the accents, the desire to be accepted by another culture, the willingness to learn, the unconditional love. That recipe made me.

No matter what side of the family I was with, I was always greeted with a warm hug and a cup of tea. Love is love.

Thank you @preeti.chawla and @witkinphoto. I turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself 😂

I grew up having such a love-hate relationship with my name. I was teased in america, then questioned in India... I cared too much about what people thought and never appreciated the uniqueness of my name. Finally at 18 as I entered adulthood (I even writing my college essay about my name), I started to come around to it. Now at 29 years old I love it and am so grateful to my nani for coming up with it. Thank you to my parents! @preeti.chawla @witkinphoto 😌

Based on the true story of my life as an Indian girl named India who spent her entire life traveling to India. My little secret? Sometimes I’d tell people my name was Priya or Emily. Just to avoid the questions, confusion, laughs and teasing.

Happy Diwali to all those that celebrate 🎊 🪔🇮🇳 May this year bring you light, positivity and laughs 😂

FYI I’ve never assaulted or victimized an Indian immigration agent nor do i condone it - although calling them a बेवकूफ़ (bevakoof aka idiot) as a white passing foreigner will certainty do the job.

If you’re in NYC area and need some south Asian ✨GLAM ✨ hit up @bynaveenchhinji for hair makeup needs!! She made me look and feel like a real Indian princess 👑

Best believe it is the highlight of my MONTH when someone says “you look Indian.” As a mixed girl with Punjabi/Sindhi heritage I’ve always desired to be seen as Indian. To get external validation of my proud heritage. Of a country I feel so close to but never felt accepted by.

Before making content (and even now all the time), no one believes me when I say I’m Indian. Especially the other Indians. Then there are the trollers on the internet who comment things like “why would anyone want to look Indian??” My dude… have you seen Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai and SR mf K? R u ok?? Indians are some of the most beautiful people on the planet.

Lastly, Indians don’t look like one thing. We’re incredibly diverse — it is a subcontinent after all. Love to my fellow Indians who get told they don’t look Indian. 🥹🙏🏽

“I thought I’d lost a debit card. Instead, destiny gave me the gift of kindness…
While travelling through Kerala, I’d stopped at a courier office in Varkala to ship some clothes home. That’s where I met Krishna. We were complete strangers. When I needed cash for the shipment, he offered to take me to a nearby ATM on his scooter. I paid, thanked him, and continued my journey to Cochin.
I realised I’d left my debit card in the ATM and I was flying out of India the very next day. That night, panic set in. I messaged Krishna, hoping there was still a chance. The next morning, he checked the ATM and found my card. Somehow, someone had found it and left it safely on top of the machine. But there was still a problem: it was Sunday, courier services were closed, and there was no way to get it back to me in time.
Then, at 7pm that evening, Krishna appeared outside my homestay. He and two of his friends took time off, and drove nearly 6 hours from Varkala to Cochin to hand-deliver my card. I even offered to pay for all the travelling he did, but they did not accept it. He said, ‘Save it for your travels.’
Nearly a year later, we’re still in touch. And while Krishna has never wanted anything from me, I’ve quietly hoped his story might reach the right people at DHL and open new doors for him. As a half Indian-American, that trip was more than just a vacation – it was a chance to explore the places, culture, and people that had shaped so much of my family’s story. My Nani named me India so I’d never forget where I came from and this experience just brought me closer to home.” by @indiawitkin
