POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Behind everything we do are the teachings and principles carried forward by the previous generation of Indigenous Brilliance.

Every circle, podcast episode, reading series, and future project is rooted in these 10 values and in the care, responsibility, and vision they continue to guide us with.

We share them with our community as a way of naming our north and as an invitation to keep building, collaborating, and dreaming alongside one another toward greater collective futures. by @indigenousbrilliance

For the last few months, we’ve been sitting with the question of what gives north to our work, our stories, and this collective.

By decolonizing structures often shaped by colonial corporate systems and by two-eye seeing them, we began finding words to name what guided each of our members, to acknowledge our history and our commitment to community.

What emerged was not simply a manifesto, but something to hold us accountable to one another, to remind us why we do what we do, and to keep us walking toward the same horizon together. by @indigenousbrilliance

In 2018, the Canadian census revealed that only 2% of the people who listed “author” as their occupation were Indigenous.

For our founders, this reflected centuries of Indigenous voices being silenced and a reminder that this reality was still ongoing. It also affirmed the urgency of creating spaces where our stories could return, flourish, and be heard on our own terms.

What we do is a response to social inequality: creating pathways for more Indigenous writers and artists from Turtle Island and beyond to keep imagining, creating, and dreaming bigger futures for our communities. by @indigenousbrilliance

On this day, September 30th, we honour the children who never made it home, and those who returned carrying grief and wounds that reached into their bodies, families, communities, and spirits.

We honour truth-telling as sacred work, and we face together the history that continues to shape our communities and our responsibilities today.

Forgetting harms our communities, and healing is only possible in togetherness.

May we walk today, and in the days to come, with open hearts and listening spirits. 🧡

We had so much fun at our last Art & Writing Circle of the season! natasha @_smudgee_ shared examples of poetry comics from the Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Graphic Literature, and led a couple of generative writing and drawing exercises.

We’re taking the summer to plan more programming. What kinds of events would you like to see more of? by @indigenousbrilliance

First release of the season!

Our amazing Emma Jeffrey has been working hard on creating this new website. A milestone for our collective and a reflection of the spirit behind the work we do.

This new chapter allows us to grow more fully into our voice, vision, and community.

Shout out to @xo.selkie for such incredible work, and to our whole collective for bringing this to life ✨

A lot has been shifting behind the scenes.

We’ve been reflecting on where we’ve been, what we want to carry forward, and what new possibilities are opening for this collective.

This next chapter is rooted in transformation, community, and storytelling.

This year, we’ve been working hard to keep opening more pathways for our brilliance.

We’ve moved through a quieter season and all kinds of challenges that pushed us to keep finding new ways to bloom for our team, our history, our purpose.

Curious about blending poetry and comics?

In this month’s Art & Writing Circle, natasha gauthier @_smudgee_ will show us some examples of BIPOC artists who resist colonial contraints by creating poetry comics.

Then we'll make our own together by focusing on our surroundings, our senses, and very simple materials—all you need is something to write with, such as a pen and paper. But pencil, crayon, markers, or whatever you have on hand will also work just fine.

Come ground yourself with us online for an hour on Sunday, May 31st from noon to 1pm PST.

As always, this free event is open to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cis and trans women, trans men, Two-Spirit, nonbinary people, and others who are of minority gender expressions. Those Indigenous to colonized lands outside of Turtle Island are also very welcome!

Special thanks to @bcartscouncil for funding this event. by @indigenousbrilliance
