Last Tuesday, our dining room was full of stories 🌿

As part of the Australian Native Food Festival, we invited three of Australia's most respected First Nations native foods leaders into the Refettorio kitchen: Sharon Winsor (@indigiearth), Aunty Rayleen Brown (@kungkascancook) and Ben Tyler (@kakadu_kitchen). They co-designed and inspired a stunning menu celebrating rescued and native ingredients side by side with our chefs, plated up for one very special night.

🫐 Guests arrived to a Kakadu Kitchen x OzHarvest Ventures Conscious Drink, made from rescued blueberries, native lemongrass, saltbush and pepperberry.
🔥 Damper with pepperberry butter
🍜 Asian mushroom and native greens tortellini in a Kakadu wild-harvested lemongrass and coconut broth, by Ben
🥧 Central Desert wattleseed tart with smoked potato custard, honey glazed baby vegetables and a macadamia wattleseed crumb, by Aunty Rayleen
 ☕ Wattleseed tiramisu, by Sharon

The food was incredible, but the conversation is what stayed with us. Sharon and Aunty Rayleen shared the stories, knowledge and culture behind every ingredient on the plate.
Aunty Rayleen advocated that each ingredient should have stories and connections back to Country. Every ingredient, has a person or community behind it connected that should be honoured and celebrated.
And Sharon shared the importance of why the industry should be led by First Nations communities and people, where currently less than 2% of the native foods industry is represented by First Nations peoples.
Ben who was unable to join in person, shared a message of gratitude to the leaders and in particular women who came before, and who paved the way for the native industry to thrive today.

A huge thank you to Sharon, Aunty Rayleen and Ben for their generosity, to the ANFF team, and to everyone who joined us at the table. Every ticket supported Indigiearth, Kungkas Can Cook, Kakadu Kitchen and Refettorio OzHarvest 💛

A powerful story about the Australian Native Food Festival in this week’s @koorimailnewspaper. ❤️

And behind this festival is a story of its own.

The Australian Native Food Festival is produced in house by Indigiearth with a team of just 2.5 people.

There is no big production company behind us. No huge team. No endless budget.

We operate through sponsorship, personal investment from Indigiearth, and 30 years of industry experience leveraging relationships, friendships, trust and connections that have been built over decades.

We back ourselves. We back our people. And we keep finding a way to make it happen. Because this festival is bigger than an event.

Our food. Our culture. Our knowledge. Our businesses. Our future.

And while we’re still catching our breath from year two, the dates are already locked in and planning for the 3rd Australian Native Food Festival is underway.

Three years.
Built from the ground up.
By us
For our people
And for everyone who believes in the future of Australian native foods

An honour to be part of the Australian Native Food Festival for the second year in a row at @carriageworks , and to stand beside my beautiful friend Sharon Windsor @indigiearth as she brings her vision to life sharing native ingredients, stories, knowledge and practices from the world’s oldest continuous living culture.

Sharon, a week later and I am still feeling the healing energy from those three incredible days. Thank you for bringing us together, for creating a space where knowledge is shared so generously, and for reminding us of just how much our rich Indigenous culture and heritage has to teach us all.
I am a better person and a better cook because of this experience and I am so proud to call you my friend. You are a visionary, a thought leader, a voice and a force and I am behind you to the moon.

And to Rayleen @kungkascancook my soul sister, Thankyou for everything you have shared with me over the past two years, your connection to land and country leaves me in awe, covered in goosebumps and brings me to tears every single time we speak, you have enriched my life in so many ways and I can’t wait to bring our plans to life next year.

💛 A HUGE APPRECIATION POST FOR OUR VOLUNTEERS 💛

There is absolutely no way we could have made it through the weekend without the incredible people who volunteered their time, energy, love and support to help bring the Australian Native Food Festival to life.

I honestly don’t think words can properly express how grateful I am.

Our beautiful @ozharvest team, the unconditional love and support you continue to give us means more than you know. You were everywhere we needed you, helping on the cooking stage, filling gaps, jumping in wherever something needed to be done, and just getting stuck in.

To our incredible facilitators who came to share their knowledge and skills, but also saw where help was needed and jumped in without hesitation, thank you. You gave so much more than what was asked of you.

And then there were my high school besties ❤️ I threw you straight into the deep end and you just got on with it without batting an eyelid. You showed up for me and supported me because you know how much the festival me.

That is the kind of love I feel so incredibly lucky to have around me.

This festival takes a village. It takes people who believe in the vision, who care about our people and our industry, and who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do whatever needs to be done.

To every single volunteer who gave up their weekend, their time, their energy and their feet, THANK YOU.

You helped create something really special.

I see you. I appreciate you. And I am so bloody grateful for every one of you. ❤️

I didn’t manage to get a photo with an incredible friend/ sister and her husband who travelled from Dubbo to volunteer for the 3 days. Im so lucky to be your sister @sisgoolagong

Our people. Our community. Our village. 🖤💛❤️

Blak excellence was everywhere on the weekend at the Australian Native Food Festival.

In every business, every brand, every person, every family and every community who showed up and represented with pride, passion, culture and integrity.

Watching businesses sell out of products on the very first day was incredible to see.

This is what happens when we create the space, the platform and the opportunity for our people to be seen. These kinds of opportunities were not around for when we started 30 years ago, so we create them for ourselves.

Our people showed up.
They backed themselves.
They shared their stories.
They represented culture.
And they delivered.

And I’m so very proud.

Blak excellence in every direction.

And this is only the beginning for the festival with huge success in its 2nd year.

Tuesday night at @refettorioozharvest for an @ozharvest Conscious Dinner hosted by Sharon Winsor and Rayleen Brown.

The whole menu was centred around native Australian ingredients, which is something I’ve been wanting to learn a lot more about.

We also had the @kakadu_kitchen x OzHarvest Conscious Drink supplied to everyone on the night.

Such a good way to experience ingredients I haven’t cooked with much myself yet.

My good friend Ben Tyler (from @kakadu_kitchen), who I met filming Recipe of the Year, was meant to be there on the night but unfortunately couldn’t make it.

This was his mushroom and native greens tortellini.

Absolutely incredible.

I especially loved the coconut and native lemongrass broth.

Rayleen Brown’s (from @kungkascancook) Central Desert wattleseed tart.

I loved this, but what really interested me was the pigface in the salad and the use of wattleseed.

I’ve actually got pigface growing at home, so I really want to start playing around with it.

And given how many dessert tarts I make, wattleseed is definitely something I want to explore too.

Sharon Winsor’s (from @indigiearth) wattleseed tiramisu was amazing.

What I loved most was how simple it was.

It wasn’t overcomplicated. The wattleseed just worked with the tiramisu and was allowed to come through.

So so good.

This was probably the biggest thing I took away from both the ANFF weekend and this dinner.

So much of the knowledge around bush foods comes from First Nations people, but that doesn’t necessarily mean First Nations people have been the ones benefiting commercially from it.

Sharon spoke about the work being done around certification and provenance, so people can better understand where native ingredients are coming from and who they’re supporting.

That’s something I’m going to think a lot more carefully about when I start using these ingredients myself.

I’m also really interested in getting involved and helping out with next year’s ANFF. by @indigiearth

There is a very long list of thank yous that deserve some very big shout outs for the love, support, participation, belief and friendship that helped make this festival what it was.

I feel incredibly grateful, and very lucky, to be surrounded by some of the most incredible people who continue to lift me up, stand beside me and support what I do.

I’m going to start with this beautiful line-up of friends who showed up, gave their time, shared their knowledge, supported the festival and, most importantly, continue to celebrate and believe in what I do in so many different ways.

A very special mention to our beautiful Governor-General of Australia, who returned for our 2nd festival and brought with her the most beautiful handmade gift that she personally made for me.

I’m incredibly lucky to have Sam be part of our family and to have her continue to show up and support what we are building.

I don’t take any of it for granted.

Thank you for showing up.
Thank you for believing.
Thank you for standing beside me.

And thank you for being part of this journey.

There is so much more to come.
