Designing a logo for my friend’s band feels so full-circle—they played their first show at my bday last year, and I’m still crying about it tbh.

Their music is like shoegaze + experimental and i hope y’all get to hear it one day. Let me know if you have any qs about the process!

im soooo excited to see how the holographic stickers for this design turn out 🥺✨

( plz ignore all the halls wrappers lol )

things I wish I knew before trying to sculpt with air dry clay + my thoughts on the different clay brands I’ve tested so far:

1. You really don’t need to overbuy tools when you’re starting. And NO, you do not need one of those aesthetic clear acrylic rolling pins 😭 any round container works perfectly fine.

2. toothpicks + cotton swabs are what I keep reaching for on this batch of charms. they’re great for tiny details, smoothing edges, and cleaning things up.

3. investing in a good exacto knife is the only thing I’d recommend spending on during the sculpting part of this process.

4. a paintbrush with a little water can fix almost anything / help smooth things out.

5. always slip + score before attaching pieces of clay!! especially if you’re layering details or adding small attachments.

6. if you’re sensitive to smells or textures, pay attention to how the clay feels on your hands. some leave a heavy residue while others feel cleaner and easier to wash off.

my clay brand review so far:

regular Nara:

•my least favorite!
• way too soft for small charms
• didn’t hold its shape well
•everything kept turning into a blob no matter what I tried

DAS:

• super workable and probably your safest bet for a beginner (frequently goes on sale!)
• has a strong, glue-like smell, so keep that in mind if you’re sensitive to scents
• leaves a chalky, plaster-like residue on your hands while working.. (this is the hardest one to wash off)
• dries the hardest / most stone-like out of the ones I’ve tried
• mine cracked a little more as it dried compared to Jovi
• seems better for sturdier pieces, slabs, bases, or flatter shapes

Jovi:

• my favorite so far for small charms and details
• smoother/creamier straight out of the pack
• easier to sculpt with
• holds its shape well
• feels less “chemically” overall in daily use
• virtually odorless, which makes it way more pleasant to work with
• doesn’t leave as much residue on your hands and washes off easily
• I haven’t noticed much cracking as it dries 👍🏾

still figuring stuff out, but do yall have any tips? or are you overspending on crafts supplies??

things I wish I knew before working with polymer clay for the first time ✨🐰🪽

I usually work with air-dry clay, so here are the key differences I noticed and what helped me make these bag charms.

conditioning:

1. polymer clay needs to be conditioned before it can be sculpted. if ur clay feels impossible to shape, it probably needs to be warmed up or kneaded before it becomes workable.

2. Vaseline works great as a substitute for clay softener and can help soften hard clay, but don’t overdo it because you cannot take it back out.

3. my best tip for conditioning is to chop the hard clay into tiny pieces first, then add Vaseline gradually and keep kneading until it softens.

tools / essentials:

4. an oven-safe work mat srsly helps contain the clay residue while you’re sculpting and baking.

5. unlike air-dry clay, you can’t use water to smooth polymer clay. a flexible rubber tool / silicone clay shaper works better for blending the surface.

preventing dust:

6. polymer clay is notoriously sticky and attracts dust + fingerprints. wipe down your surface with rubbing alcohol before sculpting.

7. use scrap clay like a lint roller to pick up dust from tools and your surface.

8. before baking, cornstarch can help reduce fingerprints, prevent sticking, and smooth the surface.

More tips for beginners who want to start making bag charms with air dry clay 🍒🧚🏽✨

the barrier to entry is low - especially when you know what’s worth investing in upfront.

1. start by investing in the things that’ll make your charm durable. good clay, sturdy hardware, and a strong protective coating matter more than fancy tools. everything else can be troubleshot as you go.

2. simple tools will take you further than you think. toothpicks, cotton swabs, an old paintbrush, water, and old pliers you already have will do most of the work when you’re making tiny charms.

3. you can typically get the main supplies you need without paying full price. check your local craft store’s website or app before buying clay or hardware.

4. save money on the decorative parts! thrift your beads, repurpose broken jewelry, reuse hardware from old keychains, or take apart accessories you don’t wear anymore.

5. when sculpting remember to make your charm into a shape that can actually survive being used. the more compact the shape is, the less likely it is to snap off later. if you’re making air-dry clay charms, try to avoid super thin or dainty pieces unless you plan to reinforce them.

6. your hardware / wire’s workability matters just as much as its strength. stainless steel is best. if you’re making eye pins by hand, I’d start with 20 or 22 gauge wire. 20 gauge is sturdier, 22 gauge is easier to bend. anything too thick will have you fighting for your life trying to shape it.

Are there any parts of the process yall want to see more indepth?

things I wish I knew before painting + sealing my air-dry clay bag charms 🥭🐚✨

prep work is EVERYTHING. having a proper base to paint on sets you up for the best final result. a lot of these steps are optional, but they make a huge difference imo.

before painting:

1. make sure your clay is completely dry first. even if it feels dry on the outside, the inside can still hold moisture. painting or sealing it too early can mess up the finish later

2. sanding is optional, but it makes a major difference. it helps smooth out little imperfections so your finished charm looks cleaner and more polished. wear a mask!

3. wipe your charm down with rubbing alcohol after sanding. this removes all the clay dust so you aren’t painting over a dusty surface.

4. adding a thin layer of Mod Podge before painting (optional). it creates a slightly sticky base for the acrylic paint to grab onto and can help the surface look smoother.

5. I use acrylic paint and tiny nail-art brushes for the small details.

for a glossy finish:

6. I use UV resin for small charms. it’s easier for me to control than epoxy, cures much faster, and makes the charms look super glossy—almost like glass.

7. apply two thin coats for a smooth, durable finish. cure fully between each layer.

8. if ur using uv resin, rotate the charm under the lamp for the first 30 seconds so the resin doesn’t pool or drip. once it sets, you can place it down and keep curing it from different angles.

9. ur resin tools are probably going to get ruined, so either use disposable tools or dedicate a few tools just for resin. toothpicks came in clutch again !

10. if the resin still feels tacky, wipe it with rubbing alcohol and cure it longer.
I personally would rather over-cure than under-cure.

11. keep the charms separated while curing. resin-coated pieces can stick together and pull up or damage the finish if they touch.

12. wear nitrile gloves and work in a ventilated space. resin is toxic, so try not to get it on your skin.

things I wish I knew before making DIY charms for my Doc Martens ⛓️⭐️

I wear these Docs all the time, so I wanted to customize them with some charm-wear.

the main thing I wanted was for these boot charms to be detachable, so I can just take them off or switch them out.

1. add a detachable clasp if you can. it makes the whole process feel way less permanent, and you can remove them if the sound or movement gets annoying.

2. this is a very forgiving process. if you don’t like a charm placement, you can unclip it, move things around, or rebuild the chain.

3. you can repurpose old jewelry, broken jewelry, beads, shells, and random little things you already have.

I used cowrie shells from an old bracelet that broke, which made me feel less sad about losing the bracelet because now it gets to live on in a new way and it’s giving Caribbean punk rock.

4. test your charm placement. I avoided putting charms on the inside of the boot where they’d rub against my other shoe, considering I didn’t want the charms or the shoe getting worn down while I walk.

5. find hardware that is actually workable! if your wire, jump rings, or chain are too stiff, you’re going to have the hardest time of your life trying to bend, wrap, and attach everything.

6. I might end up getting a one-step looper after all because making tiny loops by hand is not giving what yall said it would!

I’m still looking for durable but workable hardware for this type of craft, so please let me know what wire / chain / jump rings you recommend.

Thoughts on boot charms?

you guys asked for it, so I made a little slip + score tutorial 🐰✨

this is the method I use to attach pieces of air-dry clay together so they’re much less likely to break off.

steps:

1. make slip by mixing a little air-dry clay with water (this is your glue)
2. score both pieces where they’ll connect
3. apply the slip
4. press the pieces together firmly
5. blend and smooth the seam
6. let it dry completely before painting or sealing

hope this helps!! 💗

let me know if ya have any questions!

what I learned as a beginner on my first attempt at making air-dry clay bag charms:

🐰🗝️✨

1. let the clay dry fully before painting or sealing anything.

2. use stainless steel wire instead of aluminum wire — it’s way stronger.. you will need to invest in WIRE CUTTERS for stainless steel wire.

3. sanding your clay is messy AF but makes a huge difference… wear a mask.

4. thin pieces can break easily, so reinforce any delicate details.

5. UV resin > epoxy if you have a UV lamp — less messy, cures WAY faster, and easier for small projects.

6. seal your charms with resin or another top coat — air-dry clay can DISINTEGRATE over time if left unprotected.. wear gloves!

7. work in a well-ventilated space, especially when sanding or using resin.

8. Hobby Lobby often has rlly good sales on clay + resin. (I know some people are boycotting tho 😭)

still experimenting but I fear I’m becoming an air-dry clay person.

did I miss anything?? any tips y’all wanna trade with me?
