In his writing on Goethe’s theory of colour, Rudolf Steiner describes yellow as appearing beside light and blue beside darkness. Between these poles, lilac holds the rhythm of their encounter: the visible trace of invisible formative forces.

Goethe writes of blue as “darkness seen through light,” and describes it as carrying distance and drawing us after it. That formulation remains extraordinarily precise. Blue withholds imposition. It invites. It withdraws even as it calls. Rudolf Steiner’s language is also resonant here, especially his sense that in “aether-blue” the spirit’s longing reposes.
