Intense event. Intense experience. Where do I even start? @esomar_hq congress in #Valencia, España

💡 The opening keynote, my first highlight, and the reminder that we can actively create the future. When Dr. Knatokie Ford (@fly_sci) shared that her plan was to become part of Black History in the US, I strongly resonated with it, given my Indonesian roots and my experience of living in Germany and Europe. Envision early. And remember, it’s never too late!

Credit to the programme committee: a programme of this depth takes enormous work. The result was not only intense, but immersive. 👏

💡 A paper on the war in Ukraine offered powerful lessons in adapting research when stability can no longer be assumed. Evgeniya reminded us that what we learn in one crisis can prepare us for many others.

💬 Then there was the Debate of the Titans: industry veterans challenging each other on the future of insights — or, more provocatively, “Are surveys dead?”

I also enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. Different people, different countries, and a reminder of 20+ years in this industry 😅 Germany, Singapore, Indonesia, India, Thailand, the Philippines, the Netherlands, Spain only not met anybody from Chile...

✨ Another highlight was the ESOMAR Awards Night. And perhaps it was coincidence, that I spoke with all three global #Impact Award winners. My indigenous Batak (Sumatra) side would, of course, say there was a reason. 😊

Whether Zimbabwe, Ireland or India, Punit Mittal’s “Building Enduring Brands” presentation showed the power of connecting purpose, culture and sustainability with 800 million (!) people through something they already care deeply about — turning quiet moments into opportunities for impact, with 600,000 real trees planted.

And isn’t that what we should continuously ask ourselves? What value do we create with our work — our companies, products and, ultimately our brands?

Thank you so much, Team ESOMAR, for a truly memorable week — and for bringing together six continents in Valencia 🫶 Especially in these times, bringing people together matters more than ever.

Fair & Festival: What does it really take to expand internationally #SME?

I had the honour of co-moderating the Business Dialogue at Pasar Hamburg — at the first invitation-only business day bringing together entrepreneurs and business leaders to discuss opportunities with Indonesia and international collaboration.

I’m especially grateful to have shared the stage with many inspiring entrepreneurs and artists. Thank you to the founder Mbak Juli - @julismileforbali - for this opportunity. It was truly an honour to be part of it.

And, it was a strong reminder of what happens when people, ideas, cultures and businesses come together.

With more than 2,000 attendees, Pasar Hamburg has grown into one of Europe’s largest Indonesian cultural festivals — and, since last year, an important business forum and trade fair for Indonesian entrepreneurs and businesses looking to expand internationally. 🌏🤝 #UMKM

It also made me reflect on a question I often hear:
How do you expand internationally — and where do you start?

A few key tips:
1. Understand the country & region
Don’t assume. Listen, learn and test.
2. Find the right people — and partner.
The right partner who brings local knowledge, trust, networks and access.
3. Start small. Test. Learn. Adapt. Pivot.

And sometimes you discover: it’s simply not the right time. That isn’t failure. It’s valuable market intelligence.

Because international collaboration isn’t only about where you go. It’s about who you go there with. And this goes far beyond business. Whether it’s business, diplomacy, cultural exchange or disaster relief:

People build bridges.
Partners make them stronger.
Trust makes them last. 🌏🤝

Meaningful impact begins when we connect across cultures, borders and differences — with a shared purpose.

Great ideas cross borders—and collaboration turns them into a global perspective. 🌍✨ Still impressed by the energy at The H.E.L.M. 2026 in #Delhi, #India.

It was an honour to be part of this first international edition, bringing together 250+ people from India and beyond to exchange ideas, build connections and share perspectives on the future of market research and insights.

After two decades in market research and more than 15 years of running publications, I truly appreciate event formats that create space for meaningful conversations, genuine connections, and, of course, storytelling.

I was especially grateful to share part of my own journey—being born into two very different cultures and systems, and how this has shaped my perspective since childhood, my work, and ultimately, my sense of purpose.

India felt very special this time 🇮🇳❤️ Almost 20 years ago, I spent a few months in Hyderabad. It seems, that I was just waiting for the right reason to return. And, I couldn't have imagined a better way to begin my new chapter with India.

Every journey has a beginning.

At The HELM Story Room,

Claudia Siregar took us back to hers, reflecting on the moments that gave her the confidence to keep moving forward and the lessons she would share with her younger self.

It was an honest reminder that confidence isn't something we're born with. It's something we build, one decision at a time.

Choose your battles wisely ... Wir brauchen Frauen in den Räumen, in denen wichtige Entscheidungen getroffen werden. Und gleichzeitig ist es wichtig, den eigenen Space zu finden ... dort, wo man etwas bewirken kann... Vielen Dank für diesen Ratschlag!

Manchmal hilft auch schon ein kurzer Austausch, um sich an bestimmte Situationen zu erinnern und dann wichtige Entscheidungen zu treffen 🙏 #GotongRoyong
