In the Mentawai Islands, the sea is not just scenery. It is the main way people get around.

The islands are off the west coast of Sumatra, with villages scattered across several islands divided by open water. For many, boats are just part of daily life. People use them to visit other villages, see family, bring supplies, go to school, or reach a nearby island.

These trips feel familiar to everyone. Children learn the local waterways as they grow up, families often travel together, and small boats go back and forth between the islands all day.

Life in the Mentawais has always depended on the ocean. It provides food, brings communities together, and shapes how everyone travels around the islands.

For visitors, taking a boat can seem like an adventure. For locals, it is just a normal part of life.

Most people visit the Mentawai Islands for surfing, since the waves are some of the best in the world. But there is more to discover. Visitors also come for the rich indigenous culture, to explore the rainforests, and to enjoy clear waters and marine life. Are you interested in learning more about “The Ments?”

Three bays, each with its own sand color, sit in a landscape that feels almost unreal.

Padar Island is part of Komodo National Park, located between Sumbawa and Flores. From its well-known viewpoint, you can see curved beaches where deep blue water meets white, pink, and dark volcanic sand.

Padar is just one part of Labuan Bajo’s amazing landscape. The waters nearby are full of coral reefs, manta rays, and many kinds of marine life. Each nearby island has its own stories, communities, and traditions.

The sea, the volcanoes, and the people who have lived here for generations have shaped this place.

Labuan Bajo is the starting point, but the real adventure begins past the harbor.

Have you ever been there?

Wildlife across Indonesia’s islands, forests and volcanoes has changed in amazing ways over time.

Some animals are well-known symbols of Indonesia, while others are much less familiar. These rare species live only on certain islands and in special habitats, shaped by millions of years apart from the rest.

The Sumatran tiger, the Komodo dragon, the curious tarsier, the remarkable maleo, and the elusive Javan rhinoceros.

Discover the wonders of Indonesia’s wildlife. Send me a DM.

Indonesian cuisine is as diverse as the archipelago itself.

Each region has its own way of cooking, eating, and coming together over food, from the smoky flavors of Padang dishes and the fragrant spices of Java to the fresh tastes of Bali and the unique foods of the eastern islands.

Central to Indonesian food are ingredients that have been part of its history for centuries, such as rice, coconut, chili, turmeric, ginger, galangal, lemongrass, and many other spices.

Indonesian food is really a collection of many cuisines. Geography, history, culture, and generations of knowledge shared from one kitchen to another shaped it.

What’s your favorite Indonesian dish?

Indonesia is so much more than Bali! and the Baduy villages in Banten are one reason I created this series.
This isn’t a place to treat like another “hidden gem” to collect. Visiting requires time, local guidance and genuine respect for the community and its rules.
Save this for an Indonesia itinerary beyond the usual tourist trail. and follow @indobydesign for place #4.

Two hours of making batik and you’ll never look at a “handmade” price tag the same way again.
If you’re planning a trip to Indonesia, leave yourself an afternoon in Yogyakarta for a batik class. Especially if you’re the kind of traveler who loves making something to bring home.
I live here and afternoons like this still make me so happy. Time to sit down, learn from a local artisan, chat and get completely absorbed in something I’m clearly not naturally gifted at.
Would you take a craft class on vacation? Or do you prefer buying something made by someone who actually knows what they’re doing? ^^

Save this for your Java itinerary.
