I don't think I'll ever be able to fully express what it felt like to stand in Shanksville, PA and draw these faces. I had the profound honor of creating chalk portraits of Deora Francis Bodley and Nicole Carol Miller as part of a group of artists honoring all 40 people who were aboard United Flight 93.

I've painted a lot of faces over the years. Children, families, animals… but this was different.

As I worked, sometimes through tears, on Deora and Nicole, I kept thinking about the fact that I wasn't just drawing a face. I was drawing someone's daughter. Someone's friend. Someone's sister. Someone with dreams. Someone who had a whole life ahead of her.

And then I had the incredible privilege of meeting Deora's mother and sister. I had never met them before, yet somehow I felt an immediate closeness with them. There was a warmth and connection that I wasn't expecting. Meeting the people who knew and loved Deora made the experience of creating her portrait feel even more personal. Suddenly, Deora wasn't just a name or a photograph I had been studying to recreate.

She felt real.

I hope that, for this brief moment, the presence of these passengers was felt again. We were given an opportunity to keep their memories alive through art—to see their faces, learn their names, and remember that these weren't simply 40 names associated with a historic event.

They were 40 individual lives.

Twenty-five years ago, on September 11, 2001, our country was forever changed. A hole was left in America's heart. But standing there 25 years later, I saw incredible beauty. Beauty in the courage of the people aboard Flight 93. Beauty in the community that responded. Beauty in the families who continue to carry their loved ones' stories. And beauty in the artists who came together to make sure those stories continue to be seen.

Art can't change what happened that day. But it can help make sure they are never forgotten.

I feel incredibly grateful that I could play a small part in keeping their memories alive. Thank you, @thechalkingdad for the opportunity to be a part of something so emotional and so meaningful.

I do more than just cute kids and critters! 🐾👧

Yes, I love painting children and animal portraits. Yes, I create 2D artwork and paint at public events. But I do break out of the flat world and make something that looks like it’s jumping right off the ground!

This 3D piece was created for a private event last year, and it was such a fun change of pace.

Murals. Street paintings. 2D. 3D. Portraits. Public events. Private events. Big ideas. Tiny details.

If you have a space, an event, or an idea that needs a little artistic magic, I’m always up for the challenge. 😜🎨

Today’s artist spotlight belongs to someone we’re lovingly calling our “Long Lost Artist.” ❤️🎨

This year was our very first time meeting Jennifer Ripassa... but somehow it didn’t feel like it.

With family ties to the Wahpeton area, Jennifer already had a connection to our community before ever setting up a chalk square downtown. Once we finally met her, it all made sense. She fit right in.

Jennifer has the kind of personality that instantly puts people at ease. She’s warm, welcoming, always ready with a laugh, and the type of artist who simply rolls with whatever the weekend throws her way... including a healthy dose of Midwest humidity! 😅

Her artwork is every bit as captivating as she is. Known for breathtakingly realistic portraits paired with vibrant wildlife, Jennifer has an incredible way of telling a story through chalk. This year’s piece stopped people in their tracks—a young girl surrounded by colorful tree frogs, each one pulling your eyes across the artwork as if they were all sharing the same curious moment. It was the perfect blend of wonder, realism, and imagination.

Jennifer, thank you for making the trip to Wahpeton, sharing your talent with our community, and becoming part of the Borderline Chalkfest family. We have a feeling this won’t be the last time we see you here, and we certainly hope you’re back creating more sidewalk magic with us in the years ahead. 💛

Cuddling with penguins while looking at butterflies!! Why not? Done along the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, I did this one completely in tempera paint so the art can be enjoyed for a little longer! 😊
