I don’t know whether cities can love.
Perhaps they simply stand there in silence, while people come and go, losing themselves and finding themselves again within their streets.
You asked nothing of me. You never wanted me to become someone else.
And you taught me a new language. Not only French, but also the language of patience. Of long afternoons when nothing needed to happen. Of conversations that mattered more than time itself.
In your streets, I met people who felt as though we had already crossed paths somewhere else. As if your squares were crossroads where souls find one another when the world is finally ready for them. Some stayed; others disappeared again. But each of them left something behind.
I braved your sea. Often with my eyes, sometimes with trembling knees. I wandered your streets alone, yet I rarely felt lonely.
You invite your visitors to slow down. To take a step back. To look. To breathe. To remember that a life is not measured by appointments or achievements, but by sunlight on a balcony, by an unexpected smile, by the taste of a simple meal.
There are versions of myself I had never met before you. You introduced me to them. To the brave one. To the curious one. To the one who opened herself to a happiness so profound it almost hurt.
And ever since I left, I think of you often.
Perhaps that is why I miss you.
Because a part of me is still wandering through your streets, feeling, if only for a moment, completely at home.
And for that, I will always love you, whether you can love me back or not.
