these are notation systems for the asalato, a west african percussion instrument

most of these are not made by me, I'm using systems from @damlankosso @jeremy_m_jacobs @asalato_korea and Noriko Koide, who wrote a multiple percussion solo called Hanamachi Gimmick which uses asalato

this isn't a value judgement on any of the systems, all have their pluses and minuses

also, I reverse engineered these systems, so they may be incorrect. in particular, there is no grab notation for Noriko Koide's notation, so I have subsituted a heli

pattern i made today - still a little shakey

this is notated with both glyph notation and a notation system i call "hand to hand (HTH) notation", where each hand is shown on different spaces and the technique is notated as a sticking

edit: last den of each measure is a den grab, typo on HTH

right hand lead alternate shake 3:2 pattern

R: flip - - flop - -

L: click - click - click -

can also be done without shake or regular shake (shake is not notated)

(sorry about the humming in the back my roommate is a refrigerator)

flip-flop delay notated with glyph notation on asalato/kashaka

hey friends! this is that notation system i developed for the asalato/kashaka. there’s a few things that i’m particularly proud of:

- it’s completely independent from staff notation, so you don’t need to know how to read staff notation in order to read it…
- …but you *can* still use staff notation with it (through using the glyphs as stickings, and just putting staff notation rhythms underneath it)
- it’s based on how each technique visually looks, so it’s easier to memorize each glyph
- there are dozens of glyphs that i’ve made, and it’s easy to expand to include techniques that are really hard to notate using staff notation (i.e. throws, catches, etc.)

it will always be something that develops and changes (like how staff notation is the same). if anyone uses it, i’d be honored, but for now, it’s a way for me to document rhythms.
