The Age of Fury

by John Stephens

📚 This novel is deeply immersive historical fiction that had me gripped tightly throughout

ℹ️ I am not usually captivated by YA fiction, but this book is at the upper age of the genre due to it's close attention to research and factual accuracy of the era, A time when people had to be hard headed and hard fought to survive

💵 It's the gilded age in New York. A time of excessive wealth for those that had it and extreme poverty for those that did not (making this novel even more timely and relevant) Caitlin Quinn is on a desperate journey from Ballykelly, (Londonderry, Northern Ireland) to find her twin sister Mary after she received an ominous letter from her. Caitlin finds not a city of glitz and glamour, but a labyrinthine metropolis full of danger and deceit, perfidy and peril.

☘️ Caitlin crosses paths with William Furey, a gangster who is also searching for Mary and as the pair team up to find her they unearth not only a deep connection, but a seething mystery that will not only risk their future together, but their lives...

📚 The Age of Fury is stunning. The book captures the era perfectly, from the glitz and glamour  to the desperation and poverty of the working classes and immigrants that built New York from the ground up. John Stephens creates not only a strong storyline and relatable characters, but places them in a narrative that is highly illustrative and authentic. The careful, meticulous (and clearly extensive) research that has gone into this book is immediately apparent and is consistent throughout, making it highly immersive and immensely enjoyable

🧡 A fantastic introduction to this author

💔❤️‍🩹 This is a book of pain, regret, empathy and understanding, all intrinsically connected with three people dealing with grief borne from three different types of loss in very different ways

❤️‍🩹 My heart ached for these characters, especially their regret, but it was warmed with how a series of events brought them together, creating a support network of empathy and understanding

🎨 Chuck is the eldest of the three and he has lost his wife to cancer. He has lost his other half, the outgoing personality to his introversion, the creative to his practical. With this loss comes the regret of subduing her desire to help another person

🥊 Ella is dealing with a different type of grief. Her ex-husband has kidnapped their 8 year old daughter and left her practically destitute without a means to survive and find them. She is fighting to work and earn money to rebuild her life

🐕 Kirsten lost her father to an armed robber. Sudden, immediate, catastrophic. Her anchor is gone and she is drifting, trying to make sense of her world and where to go next

🪢 The network of connectedness between these characters in a small town is written with a quiet elegance. Not even remotely contrived, utterly plausible and thus relatable. This is a book of empathy, understanding the growth of the characters as they traverse their individual journey through grief, not seeking closure, but to process, to work through it. How each individual processes grief differently, whether it be the circumstances of the loss, the personality of the individual or their generation.

🧡 Joella writes with a deep understanding of what it is to be human, yet not just being human, but in our connectedness to those in our world who are alive and those we have lost. A stunning book that has taught me a lot and will certainly remain with me for a long time

🫶 Thank you to the author, Muswell Press and Novel Tours for this incredible novel. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

Twisted Superstitions

by Nick Verrell

This book is pure brilliance! So much so, I wish it was longer, but on the other hand, it is the perfect length to further enhance what is on the edge of your seat trepidation! I was gasping!

Anna and Ali are sisters and they make a promise; while Anna is away, at 11.11am each day after her flight lands, to make a wish...however, the problem is, that that day, is the same every day, like groundhog day. Never moving forward, never moving back, stuck in a reality fractured, timelines separated.

Ali cannot make the police believe her sister is missing, no-one will listen and as a way to cope, she sets up a website under the username of Twisted Superstition, asking others if they too had experienced the same type of disappearance. What follows are a litany of posts of all shapes and sizes, of unexplained events, both frightening and confounding, mysterious and spooky, told in dual timelines and multiple povs, culminating in an utterly brilliant bonus chapter...

This book is perfect for spoopy season and beyond. The writing is on point, the structure as captivating as doom scrolling the comments section on an intriguing post (you know you have done it and loved every word!) It is a novella and has so much potential to expand into a series. The characters are well defined and the pace is consistent. it's certainly a book that can be read in one sitting and returned to over and over

I was excited to read this book and thrilled when I got my hands on it. It was everything I was hoping for and so much more! Big Brother may be watching you and knowledge may be dangerous, but this story is absolutely brilliant

Thank you to the author for this incredible read. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own

What We Leave Behind
by Sion Scott-Wilson

📚 This is a series that I hope upon hope will continue to grow because it has got my attention and I am not ready to leave the misadventures in the rookeries of regency London, where the streets are paved with ordure instead of Gold

ℹ️ In the previous book (Some Rise by Sin) we met Sammy and Facey, resurrection men who made their money grave-robbing in the time where the medical profession paid high prices for the cadavers of the recently deceased. Screamingly unethical , but for some, the only way to earn money

🧡 In What We Leave Behind, Sammy and Rosamund are married, living an (almost) respectable life in Portsmouth and eagerly awaiting the return of their adopted son John from sea. However, John does not turn up.

👀 The story is not as simple as retrieving John, because the pair discover a deeper, darker mystery that must be solved in order to leave their legacy behind them and return to the respectibility of their new life in Portsmouth

**** Full review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/9006548479

🧡 Scott-Wilson is an incredible author. I have grown to know all of their characters to a depth greater that people I have been acquainted with in real -life, or even those I have worked with for years.   characters that I can adore and despise in equal measure, all set in environs that are brought to full 8k life in the most pleasant and abhorrent of ways

🧡 A glorious book and I cannot wait for book three! Please, there must be a book three!? Right??

The Positive Planner - ReSet

✒️ This journal is not only gorgeous, but it contains original prompts and space free thought throughout. If you are stuck for how to use any of the prompts, there are handy guides throughout

🧡 The cover is a lush, soft canvas and it folds flat on opening, making it so much easier to write while also keeping the journal intact. This is also useful if you use mixed media in your journaling

Irrelevant Situations
by Alyssa K Burns

🧡 Unique and original, focussing on contemporary dating and with it, keeping me rapt, hoping upon hope that the situationship would develop!

📚 This is what I really, really enjoyed about this book. I love a book that carves a niche for itself within a genre while creating its own sub-genre. Original and not cliched, unpredictable and intriguing

ℹ️ This is Book 2 of the Honey Cat series and I have not as yet read book 1 so I was flying in blind!

👩‍🎓 Izzie is getting ready to transfer to University from Community College. She's living with her platonic male friend Joe and everything is ticking over nicely until Joes Older brother Gavin shows up and flips the peace and tranquillity upside down, back to front and sideways. Izzie, is not a fan.

❤️‍🔥 Will these enemies grow into lovers? Will the fates align to bring them together? Or will the universe decide that it is just not cupids day?

🫶 I adored how real the characters were. Evan isn't ready to commit to a relationship and while Izzie is besotted with him, it is more a case of her going through the process of growing emotionally, to understand when it is time to stop chasing.

🫂 This book is also fascinating in how it tracks Izzie's other relationships, with family and with friends and in turn this builts a type of web of connectedness and disconnect that sheds light on how she approaches her relationship with Evan. It's worth a re-read to look at from different perspectives and each time you will experience a different story, such is the power of Burns' writing

💯 In short, refreshing, intriguing, and utterly relatable on every level. This is a series (and an author) that I am really looking forward to getting behind. Brilliant!

Any Port in a Storm

by Danielle Smyth

This is the sort of story that hits every button. I was entranced

Relatable with a capital R, Laurel and Nick have an instant connection, but as the friendship grows, so does Laurels fears of getting too close thanks to a devastating breakup in High School. The friendship grows deeper over time until it blossoms into a relationship, but when everything is going well, their peace and tranquility is shattered by a secret that tears them apart

However, the stars align and as the world shuts down in the Pandemic of 2020, serendipity causes the pair tyo be in lockdown together. A time when we all had a lot of time and nowhere to go

Told across dual timelines, Smyth captures the pure essence of dichotomy between Laurel and Nick is perfect and he is a wonderful steadying force in Laurels emotional chaos.

A great book that is real about the pandemic and the importance of taking a moment to just be, to let everything drift into the background and be together. Gorgeous narrative and a wonderful story. I cannot recommend this enough to curl up with this fall

Such a Good Man
By AJ Campbell

🧡 Every time I hear of a new book from AJ Campbell, I get a fizz of excitement because this is one of my favourite thriller writers.

📚 Campbell is keeping up the pace with "Such a Good Man", a domestic thriller that doesn't just look behind the closed doors and curtains of a quiet cul-de-sac, but dares to delve into the minds eye of a man who is reinventing himself after losing his job, all the way to the taboos between friends and their families

🧡 A fantastic read and I would highly recommend this author to thriller lovers of all types!

Blurb:

For Tommy Grainger, being a good man is everything.

He’s devoted to his wife, Lottie. A dedicated father to their two children. And though he’s just lost his job, he’s reinventing himself. The handyman jobs are only a stopgap. At least, that’s the plan.

But when a woman goes missing after a PTA meeting hosted in Tommy’s home, whispers spread through Blue Bell Close. Soon, the police are asking questions his good-guy reputation can’t withstand.

Only one person knows what really happened.

Pippa Powers.

Lottie's closest friend. Her business partner. Godmother to Tommy and Lottie’s children. And dangerously obsessed with what she can’t have.

As bodies start to fall, Pippa’s fingerprints are nowhere to be found. After all, why get blood on your hands when trust is the deadliest weapon?

A Calamity of Waters

by Chloe Turner

A Calamity of Waters is a deeply immersive historical novel which is woven around the devastating Bristol Channel and Severn Estuary floods of 1607 which swept away communities, leaving around 200 square miles of land submerged and over 2000 souls lost (This is an estimation based on the records from the time)

This novel is a story of three sisters, told from the POV of Habren who is the main protagonist. The family is scattered and fragmented, until one day, Habren is summoned to Gloucester by her sister Syble, potentially giving Habren the opportunity to rebuild the relationship, however, the River Severn begins to rise and swell, the flood immersing the region and potentially, the man who Habren loves, Ambrose

Habren is desperate to find Ambrose so they can be reunited, and with her sister Syble and friend Raynould, set off toward Bristol on a journey not just to find Ambrose, but through the comraderie derived from a challenging journey and collective grief they find parts of themselves and secrets that have been lost

Blurb:

🧡 After a lifetime together, Heti thought she knew her mother inside out. She's about to discover how wrong she was.

📦 Heti moves in a daze of grief after her mother dies, until her life is upended by the arrival of an unmarked package containing photographs of her mother as a young woman in Iran, enveloped head to toe in a black veil, pointing a machine gun at a group of sobbing young women.

🫂Unable to confront the one person she most wants answers from, she turns to the women around her, listening to their surprising, funny and often contradictory stories. Through them, she realises that every woman contains hidden lives and private truths.

🧡 So when it falls to her to organise a memorial marking the first anniversary of her mother’s death, Heti gathers the women who knew her best and asks them: Who was my mother? And who are we?

⛵️ Blue Miracle by Blair Harton had me utterly wrecked.

🌅 Summer 2026 has truly been the Summer of love, loss and at times, love again. I am not a romance reader, but this year I have dipped my toe in to a few such titles and by eckers if it wasn't a precursor to my heart getting systemically ripped apart and stomped on then tenderly put back together with gossamer stitches...only for it to be torn asunder, yeeted into the stratosphere and then remoulded in the searing heat of re-entry being all warm and fuzzy and whatnot

🎙Shannon Parker Taing and Noah Trent were the perfect narrators for this book and they really added an extra dimension to what is already an incredible book to read

☀️ Set in Monterey, California, Natalie Benson is 17 and feeling disconnected. She's heartbroken, about to ship off to Clemson Uni and to cap it all, her dad is getting hitched to someone far younger than he is. It was not shaping up to be a good Summer.

*** Full review at https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/8950258026

📚 Loved the Dual POV and Dual timeline. It's a style I really enjoy in thrillers and I have absolutely enjoyed in Blue Miracle. The whole book is so well written and well structured that I am really coming around to letting this cold GenX heart warm up a bit for the duration

😭 This is a stunning novel and it is far from hearts and flowers. It will make your heart and mind work for balance throughout and leave not just an impression, but a whole engraving on your soul
