Confession: I never had a bagel. 🥯😅

My chef neighbor originally from New York was shocked to find out I never ate one, and said Big Time Bagels at the Saturday Farmers Market in Kakaʻako was da best on island.

So I took his advice and went with “The Becky” — a breakfast sandwich for my very first bagel experience.

Best bagel I’ve ever had 😂

Absolutely delicious, and probably a pretty tough first bagel to beat!

Another great Saturday morning find right here in Kakaʻako. 👍🏽

The end of another era in Kakaʻako.

As Ward Centre comes down to make way for the future ʻIlima and Melia residences, it is hard not to think about the restaurants—and memories—that once filled these familiar walkways.

Ryan’s Grill. Compadres. Brew Moon. A Pacific Cafe. Yum Yum Tree.

For many of us, these were places for lunch with coworkers, pau hana with friends, family dinners, birthdays and spontaneous nights out. Familiar places we could return to again and again.

Ward Village has grown into one of Honolulu’s most beautiful and dynamic neighborhoods, with an impressive collection of restaurants—many of them locally owned—and a wide variety of dining experiences.

But as the neighborhood continues to grow, there may still be room for another kind of gathering place: the familiar local comfort-food restaurant where families can meet, neighbors can become regulars, and you can stop in for breakfast, lunch, dinner or something sweet without needing a special occasion.

And since I’m asking, I’ll go first:

My vote is Liliha Bakery.

Local. Familiar. Family-friendly. Approachable. And exactly the kind of neighborhood institution that would feel right at home in Ward Village.

Honestly, I may be ready to start the petition.

Tali’s Bagels & Schmear is back in Kakaʻako!

After saying goodbye to its Ward Centre location, Tali’s has relocated just a few blocks away to The Alley @ Our Space at 1052 Waimanu Street — and we stopped by during their soft opening for a first look.

New surroundings, same hand-rolled bagels, creative schmears and unmistakable Tali’s vibe.

We always love seeing a local favorite find a way to stay in the neighborhood, especially as Kakaʻako continues to change around us.

Beefy Wild is back—and still right here in Ward Village! 🍜🔥

Excited to see Kamitoku Ramen reopen at the former Scratch Kitchen spot in South Shore Market—and naturally, we had to sneak in for their popular Beefy Wild on just the second day of their soft opening.

Only 30 days after closing their previous location, they’re already back in action with a larger space, just around the corner from where they started.

Same comforting bowl. More room to enjoy it. ONE of our favorite ramen spots is officially back!

Congratulations to the Kamitoku Ramen team! Who else has been missing their Beefy Wild?

A new path to homeownership has just opened in Kakaʻako.

Kahuina has announced a new DEP opportunity offering qualified buyers a 30-year, 0% interest loan with no monthly payments—covering up to 15% of the purchase price, or as much as $90,000.

When paired with Kahuina’s 5% down payment program, eligible professionals may have an opportunity to purchase select one- and two-bedroom residences with significantly less cash required upfront.

Qualifying professions include certain healthcare workers, educators, law enforcement personnel, correctional facility staff, agricultural field workers, EMTs and other designated State and City & County employees.
