New painting. Released in 1981 by Oberheim Electronics, the DMX is a legendary, sample-based digital drum machine. Famous for its punchy 8-bit sounds and “humanized” swing and flam features, it defined the rhythm of 1980s pop, hip-hop, and new wave. It used replaceable EPROM chips, allowing musicians to swap out sound sets
The Oberheim DMX can be heard on countless classic tracks from the era, including:
“Blue Monday” by New Order (1983) – This iconic track’s relentless, driving beat was entirely programmed on the DMX.
“Every Breath You Take” by The Police (1983) – The DMX was used by Sting for the song’s foundational kick drum.
“Holiday” by Madonna (1983) – The DMX provided the instantly recognizable, upbeat rhythm for this early Madonna hit.
“It’s Like That” by Run-D.M.C. (1983) – The DMX (alongside its cousin, the Oberheim DX) was a cornerstone of early hip-hop, driving this classic.
“Rocket” by Herbie Hancock (1983) – A staple in early electronic and electro-funk, heavily relying on DMX beats. by @inkburnerprints

The Roland TR-707 (1985) is a classic 16-step digital drum machine renowned for its role in early house and techno, often cited as a cheaper, more reliable alternative to the TR-909. It features 15 punchy 12-bit sampled, non-editable sounds (including 909-style kicks/hats), individual outputs, and robust MIDI/DIN sync. Mellotron 400. Got to love the vibraphone and vocal chorus samples on this one!

It was adopted by rock and pop groups in the mid to late 1960s. One of the first pop songs featuring the Mellotron was Manfred Mann’s “Semi-Detached, Suburban Mr. James” (1966). The Beatles used it on tracks including the hit single “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967).

The Moody Blues keyboardist Mike Pinder used it extensively on the band’s 1967 album Days of Future Passed as well as the group’s following six albums. During the 1970s, the Mellotron became common in progressive rock, used by groups such as King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis.
