INKEDIN & ICONIC. Near-history, modern noise, and the brands caught in between.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last week’s newsletter seemed to get so many of you, with late 90s early agency life in Soho nostalgia swirling through the comments. I loved all your memories and messages, so here’s a part 2 of sorts…

My boss was @louislygo , still a friend now and one of the most talented artists I’ve ever met. As creative director he had assembled a team of young talent that seemed to have been collected rather than hired, and he let the kids run at things.

He talked about cool European art or incorporated graphics from The Clash and told us off for not going to enough exhibitions during work time. Being berated for not sneaking off to an exhibition whilst getting paid for it, how cool is that.

The talk at the bars was of Jonathan Glazer’s new Surfer video or Chris Cunningham’s Windowlicker, which came out within a week of each other in 1999.

XFM then a London only radio station were playing Eels’ Novocaine for the Soul, an odd record that suited the vibes of the time and Spiritualized’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space seemed to be everywhere. It felt about right for a city that had drifted a few inches off the ground.

This Is The Time Of Monsters. 🌍

Antonio Gramsci said: the old world is dying but the new order is struggling to be born. In that gap, monsters appear.

Misha Glenny watched Yugoslavia fall apart. He's been a pessimist ever since. And he thinks the monsters are everywhere right now.

New episode of StoryCo out now.

He Heard A Bullet Enter His Car. 🚗

He had permission from the Serbs to cross Sarajevo Airport. Five cars in convoy. Then the car behind him accelerated past. Then a bullet came through the door.

Hear more stories like this in this week's episode of StoryCo out now with Misha Glenny.

The track for a slow start isn't the track for a big day ahead. So we ask people we admire for three tracks, each tied to a different morning — three separate moments, and the reason behind each one.

This time it's James Kirkham — founder of ICONIC, host of the StoryCo podcast, and one of the sharpest cultural commentators around. He also writes beautifully, so this one's worth reading in full on Substack (link in bio). by @inkedin_iconic

This Newsweek magazine from November ‘96 is like a wonderful written word Time Machine.

“In more modest ways, what’s planned for the South Bank is happening across London. More spending money, a housing shortage and rising real-estate values are transforming neighborhoods in London. In Notting Hill, an impressively diverse community of million-pound homes, Yuppie flats and low-income housing, gentrification is proceeding at such a rapid pace that if there’s not a real-estate sign out front, there’s scaffolding. If you can’t get a place there, try Clerkenwell, saved from the wrecking ball in the 1970s, just west of the City. Or maybe that particularly lovely street in the raggedy East End-the refuge of the art crowd. For the next few weeks.” by @inkedin_iconic

The Door and the Bridge.

Salford Lads Club nearly closed. One photograph outside its doors saved it, put on a t-shirt, sold, and spent sending local teenagers to South Dakota.

Round the corner from me, a footbridge to Eel Pie Island. The Stones, Bowie, Clapton, the Who all crossed it before anyone was queuing for them anywhere else. Today: a £3 museum.

Most heritage gets a plaque. Some of it could get to work.
