Recycling plastic on a sailboat? Oh yes — it’s totally possible!
With two small, low-energy recycling machines on board, Sonja and Niels from our #InMoceanFleet can now turn plastic waste into new products right on their sailboat.

Lightweight and compact, these machines can even be loaded into a dinghy and brought ashore for workshops at surf schools, sailing clubs, or after a beach clean-up with an ocean conservation organization. Wherever there’s plastic waste, there’s potential for change.

Huge congrats to Sonja & Niels from Sailing Vessel MarySol on completing their first recycling training — we’re thrilled to have you in the fleet and can’t wait to see your upcoming recycling adventures!

And a big shoutout to everyone who helped fund these machines and to the @cruisingkiwis for passing them on to the next #InMoceanFleet member and to @veleirograciosa for storing them until pick up 🙌🏽🫶🏽 Together, we’re keeping plastic out of nature and bringing it back into the loop. ♻️

Today, Maria and Nike are showing the ropes to the Crew of @sailingcatalpa. From identification and separation of the plastic to shredding and the remarkable process of transforming it into new products using our mobile manually operated extruder. The state Chiapas in Mexico faces significant issues with trash infrastructure, leaving many remote communities without proper waste management facilities. @inmoceanorg teamed up with @finca.hamburgo to address this by supporting them to establish @re_creativa_sustentable — a sustainable business that transforms plastic waste into new, sellable products on-site.

Re-Creativa is a recycling workspace run by a team of inspiring local women who are passionate about creative crafting and environmental care. This initiative not only creates new income streams for the community but also helps keep the environment clean and raises awareness about plastic waste.

Re-Creativa stands as a beacon of hope, aiming to inspire other communities to join the fight against plastic pollution.

They went ashore to clean a beach. When they brought the rubbish back to the village, it started a conversation about cleaning another one. 💙

For #WorldCleanUpDay, one of our @inmoceanorg Fleet members organized a clean up on Pirates Beach in Charlotteville, Tobago, where five other sailing yachts were anchored offshore.

They collected a dinghy full of rubbish and another full of recyclables. Plastic bottles, metal cans and glass were separated for local collection, and the mini market helped with crates to transport the glass bottles.

When the group brought everything over to the village, the mayor noticed. After hearing about World Cleanup Day and discovering that other villages on Tobago were taking part, he wanted to organise a cleanup of the beach in front of his own village, too. A meeting was arranged to discuss the next steps.

That part of the story particularly stayed with us. Alongside the waste removed from one beach, there was now a conversation about what could happen next.

If you’re anchored somewhere, or spending time on your local shoreline, a cleanup can start with a few people. Ask locally where the collected waste can go and which materials can be separated. And sometimes, it does not end with collecting trash but initiates new meaningful connections.

“I learnt today that plastic waste isn’t actually waste, you can use it to make new things.”

It sounds so simple. And yet, when we hear this in our “What are you taking away from today’s workshop?” feedback round, our hearts glow. 💙

There’s something special about discovering this with your own hands and holding the result.

For three days in September, we worked with 178 pupils at Wetter.Wasser.Waterkant to explore how they can help change the path of plastic waste.

We started with why plastic waste harms nature and what currently happens to the plastic we throw away. Then it was their turn to get active:

💡 Planning a small recycling project for their school: identifying the tools and materials they would need, sharing responsibilities and working out how to put their ideas into practice.

🙌 Creating their own small product from plastic waste: seeing and feeling the transformation as something that seemed worthless became something they had shaped themselves.

The products in these hands are also a reminder: before we use new resources, let’s look at what we can do with those already in circulation.

Trash doesn’t suddenly become a problem when it reaches the ocean.

For World Cleanup Day @worldcleanupday.global, we spent two days at the LUV Center Lübeck looking at the journey of waste from different perspectives:

what ends up along the Trave, what sinks to the bottom of the Baltic Sea, why something as small as a cigarette butt can threaten our water, and what can happen when plastic is collected and used again instead of being treated as worthless.

And then, on Sunday, we took that conversation outside.

Together with 43 people a total of 137.5 kg of trash and an incredible 17,166 cigarette butts were collected around the LUV Center.

But what stayed with us most were the conversations, questions and connections that happened around it.

A huge thank you to Daniel from @__seanoise__ and Judith @luv_shopping for initiating and making these two days possible, for giving environmental education a visible space in the middle of everyday life, and for bringing so many different people and perspectives together.

Thanks as well to everyone who joined from @trashheroluebeck, Stefan @ostseereiniger, Jens and everyone who stopped, asked questions, joined one of our @inmoceanorg workshops or came out into the rain to collect with us.

World Cleanup Day may last one day.

But hopefully the questions we take away from it stay with us much longer:

Where does our waste go? What can we prevent? And what can we do differently before it ever reaches our rivers and oceans?

For International Coastal Clean Up, we did not just clean a beach…

High fives to everyone who joined @oceanconservancy ICC this year! Together, we showed what’s possible when people around the globe act for cleaner oceans together 🙌🏽🌊 you rock big time 🤘

In Eckernförde, we had a joint event with @eckernfoerderbucht @bv_meeresmuell @awr_rd_eck @muelltaucher_eckernfoerde @__seanoise__ and @inmoceanorg

Nearly 400 pupils came together to collect 135 kg of trash and more than 4.000 cigarette butts.

And we did not stop at cleaning. We separated, weighed and documented the trash to see where better solutions, infrastructure or habits are needed.

Then we moved on to showing why plastic trash should not end up in nature - apart from contaminating our precious planet: because it’s a valuable material that should be kept in the loop and turned into new products as long as possible.

Events like the ICC are a powerful tool to bring people together who are passionate about healthy oceans and shorelines all around the globe. It inspires, motivates and gives hope that together we make a difference 🌊💗

Was passiert hier am 19. September? 👀♻️

Noch sieht dieser Platz im LUV Shopping ziemlich leer aus. Am 19.09. wird hier geschreddert, erhitzt, gepresst und aus altem Kunststoff entsteht direkt vor euren Augen etwas Neues.
