this is 그늘은 그림자로, "a dwelling for two shadows" a zine I made while designing an artist studio in maryland. it functions as the architecture's liner notes, construction documents, and story. this is my way of sharing it with you.

it's for people who feel placeless. a dwelling is found, lost, and made again, just as shadows make and unmake themselves over and over in the waning morning light.

I'm releasing a small batch. DM to purchase. by @inpictureframes

the concept of this book was to depict the artworks and their corresponding displays all fading into eachother. revealing their interconnectedness.

as they sit with the individual works, visitors were encouraged to take notes and sketch. within the translucent pages, the more you write and draw, the more you start to see yourself reflected in the work as well.

separation is an illusion, something that I have to keep learning...

she collects her things in a tiny suitcase. I stand by watching. I say, "I'll see you tomorrow." she doesn't reply. I reach out to touch her but she begins to fade, softer and softer from a deep noon time blue to the gentle greys of dusk-time shadows until she is barely there. she weeps as she walks to the door, all of her falling apart. we walk into the night sea, your hand a stale air in mine. The wind howls over our hair and clothes and flows over the surface of the sea. Then my hand is truly empty. My tears fall into the ocean noiselessly. The air is cold and sharp on the small amount of skin exposed within my jacket sleeves.

I got up early on this dewy, cloudy morning and spent an hour in the dwelling drawing and reading with my coffee. The sunlight was so pale as it started to gently rain.
As i decided to leave for the office, I found myself staring at the dappled light coming in through my tall, narrow window, passing through the rustling leaves of the tree beside my studio.

Around and in between that faint glow
was a shadow moving to the wind
landing on a chair beside my window,
quivering

and in that moment I was home again, having tea and talking with the person I loved.
sitting next to her in the house we once shared, holding her hand.

it was raining like this on the night you left.

work in progress...

this is a chair made by burning reclaimed wood and cheap 1x4s from home depot. it's designed as part of an artist studio i'm working on, a distillation of a larger-scale architectural concept.

working within a limited budget and resources, I found the advantages of techniques used by asian artisans when applied to real design problems. for instance, finding beauty in emptiness, intentionally designing with shadows, and charring wood as a finish not only kept the project feasible under constraints but elevated it, making it a frame for appreciating nature and daily routines. this is the idea I aimed to convey with the studio and for now it lives in a small, imperfect chair.
