Chatham - Modern Day.

I personally believe that the closure of the dockyard has left a significant hit on the people and communities of Chatham. In regards to the regeneration of the Dockyard itself, it’s been a huge success however exploring the local communities, they do not seem to be faring the same way.

Shop closures and disconnect. The Journey between site and town centre tell two different stories. by @insdinterior

Historic Collage of the Tarred Yarn Store.

Along side the Rope House, Hemp House the site sits just by the main gates. The Yarn Store, where rope would be bundled? Organised and stored. Rope made in the 400 metre long ropery, that would make the rope used on the ships. by @insdinterior

A Historic Collage / Timeline of the dockyards. Established in 1567, and used until the 1980s, the dockyard has a rich history of providing for the development and establishment of Chatham. The closure of the dockyard marked a significant loss and change for Chatham, and unfortunately meant that many people lost their jobs. by @insdinterior

Collage elevation of The Tarred Yarn Store.

The Site resonated with me, due to the nature of lighting and accessibility to the green space outside. I had initially planned to create a brewery. But with the opportunity and research the concept has changed. (Further info to come)

The scale of the site also meant that there was a large opportunity and suited my concepts and ideas seen within my previous work.

As my final major project I believe this is an accumulation of my previous works, evolved into a complete project.

Within the 80 acres on the sight, 100 historic buildings and structures dating from the Georgian and Victorian periods to the present day,. My chosen site is sat beside the 400 metre long Ropery is the Tarred Yarn Store.

The Site spans over 80 metres and was historically used for

Storing yarn or twine, that would then be coated with tar or a similar substance to enhance its durability. Since ships were built and such a large amount of rope was needed. It would need to be durable to the conditions of the sea.

In the modern use, the site is used for filming, and has been used within several films, Tv shows and even music videos. 2/3 by @insdinterior

Historic dockyard Chatham.

The dockyard spans 80 acres, and formed in 1984, after the closure of the docks for the navy. Chatham historic dockyard is a uniquely historic site, that has a rich history of work, craft and culture. Described as the ‘mainspring of the Medway Towns’ economy’, the dockyard supported local businesses who were dependent upon the dockyard or its workforce. This year in 2024 we recognise 40 years of development and preservation of the historic dockyard, and its buildings. 1/3 by @insdinterior
