Moth of the day: Eupterote undata belongs to family Eupterotidae. They are commonly called monkey moths. Their larvae are polyphagous and feeds on wide variety of trees like teak, sal, gamhar and agricultural crops like cardamom, castor etc. The mature larvae of this moth descends from their host plants to pupate in the soil. They construct a soft, dense, silken cocoon, often reinforced with larval hairs and soil particles, within which they undergo metamorphosis on the ground or in surface leaf litter. Moth of the day: Crocidolomia pavonana commonly called the Cabbage cluster caterpillar belongs to family Crambidae. Female moths lay their eggs in masses on the undersides of host plant leaves, usually near the veins or margins. Its caterpillars known as the croci or the cabbage cluster caterpillar feed on Brassicaceae species of plants. Mature caterpillars drop to the ground and pupate in the soil, spinning silken cocoons 2 to 6 cm below the surface. Moth of the day: Pericyma cruegeri, the poinciana looper, is a moth of the family Erebidae. Their caterpillar feeds on the foliage of trees in the plant family Caesalpiniaceae, their primary hosts being copperpod and gulmohar tree. The mature caterpillar constructs a small silk cocoon by binding together leaflets of the tree with silken threads. The adults emerge out of the pupae in ten days. Moth of the day: Pygospila tyres, commonly called the Checkered Snout or the Spotted Grass Moth is a species belonging to family Crambidae. Their caterpillars are found feeding on the foliage of plants in the Apocynaceae family thus causing defoliation. These caterpillars constructs loose silken web and pupate either inside leaf or in the dry leaf litter on the ground. Adult moths feeds on nectar from flowers. In the last one year, we have recorded over 160 species of moth on our campus and tomorrow, we are throwing open the doors for a night of mothing at ATREE.

Moth of the day: Macroglossum corythus is commonly called the hummingbird hawk moth and belongs to family Sphingidae of order Lepidoptera. These moths hover and feed on nectar from flowers using their long proboscis, which gives the appearance of hummingbirds feeding on nectar and thus the name. The eggs are pale yellowish green, oval and are laid singly on the undersides of foodplant leaves which are mostly plants belonging to family Rubiaceae. Larvae are dark violet brown with dorsal specks and the pupae are brown with dark spots and found in a loose cocoon in leaf debris on the ground. Dear Sir.. You have been a great mentor, guide and a friend. My first lessons on dung beetle taxonomy was not from books or id keys.. it was from the detailed descriptions you have made after observing the beetles under the microscope. All the discussions we used to have in the lab, and during the field trips have been a great opportunity to learn from you not only about insects but also on how to observe things around us and to see their interactions and behaviour in nature. All the discoveries you have made were through these keen observations, whether it be the maze like nest pattern of the new species of ant, Anochetus daedalus or the tiny shining blue ant, Paraparatrechina neela, or the small dung beetle Onthophagus jwalae, which you had collected from your backyard in Kerala. You have been a great inspiration to all of us and have always encouraged and supported us in whatever work we took up. We will of course stay connected through the discussions on various research articles and manuscripts we are working on, but we will deeply miss your presence at ATREE. Thank you on behalf of all those who have been part of the Insect Biosystematics and Conservation Lab at ATREE. Sir, wishing you a retirement filled with good health, peace, joy and many new adventures.

One of India’s most ancient living creatures - FOUND!

Over 100 years ago, during the British-led Abor Expedition in the dense jungles of what is now Arunachal Pradesh, scientists discovered a mysterious bright-red, eyeless worm - the Red Velvet Worm, Typhloperipatus williamsoni.

Then, it vanished into legend.

In 2022, on #Earthday, with support from the National Geographic Society, our team at Felis Creations and researchers from ATREE retraced that historic journey.

Amid rain and mud in the remote Siang Valley, the Red Velvet Worm was found - after 110 years!

This tiny “walking fossil” belongs to a lineage that has survived for over 350 million years, offering a rare and incredible link to Earth’s distant past. With its velvety skin and stubby legs, it stands as one of India’s most ancient surviving creatures. Its rediscovery is a reminder: nature’s greatest wonders are still out there, waiting to be discovered.
