Stills from our shoot last August following the installation of 20 foot inflatable IUD “Freeda Womb” in downtown Chicago on Lollapalooza weekend.

The giant IUD has traveled to 40 cities across the US with @afcontraception, with a focus on visiting states that blocked the Right to Contraception Act last year.

“The problem, physicians said, is that the demographics of the women interested in getting IUDs has changed, but pain-management approaches have not.

‘In the past, IUDs were recommended mostly for women who had given birth because they were believed, incorrectly at that time, to be dangerous for young women and those who had never given birth,’ said Eve Espey, chair of ACOG’s Contraceptive Equity Expert Work Group. ‘That may have skewed the pain scores as IUD insertion often is less painful for women who have delivered vaginally,’ Espey said.”

“The ability of any person to control what happens to their body is directly related to what is happening in their community. So if a pregnant person doesn’t have citizenship papers, that’s going to have an impact on whether or not they report to a hospital or a healthcare provider for a prenatal checkup. You can’t disassociate individuals from the broader context in which they are living out their lives, which is what reproductive justice demands.”

We had the privilege of filming with the incredible activist, academic and feminist Loretta Ross in the fall of 2021. Among her long list of accomplishments during a 50-year history in social justice activism: Ross co-founded SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective in 2017 and co-created the theory of Reproductive Justice in 1994. She is a survivor of the Dalkon Shield IUD and was one of the first people to win a lawsuit against its manufacturer, A.H. Robins Company.

We’ve been closely following the organizing of 140+ Greenlandic women seeking justice after stating they were fitted with an IUD without their consent or knowledge by Danish doctors between 1966 and 1970.

In June we FINALLY got back to production and interviewed Professor Chikako Takeshita, the brilliant author of The Global Biopolitics of the IUD. The book influenced so much of our film and her insight was invaluable. Scroll for pics of our lil drive with the camera (essential for any film shoot, we’ve found) and for Julia posing with the book alone in her apartment.

Vanessa presents Wade with her removed IUD as an anniversary present and he does not immediately recognize it. To be fair, we have never seen an IUD that looks like this... have you? We can only assume that due to the film’s low budget they had to fashion a prop IUD out of a paper clip. by @insertyourselfdoc
