Starting a new series on how to build out different topics for crews with different knowledge levels. What would be helpful to see next?! by @insideturncoxing

I want to give a shoutout to one of the first and one of the most decorated Inside Turn coxswains @briejoe_ !

I’ve had the privilege of watching Brie grow from a high schooler, to a Youth National Champion, to a DI athlete, and now an ACC and NCAA medalist. This past weekend, she didn’t just finish first among collegiate boats, she also helped set a new collegiate course record of 15:02.791 in the Women’s Championship 8+.

I’m so incredibly proud of the coxswain, teammate, leader, and person Brie has become, and even more excited to see where she goes from here !! She put on an absolute masterclass this weekend… and, of course, CUT those inside turns.

go Brie, and as always, goooo @uvarowing !!! 🏆✨ by @insideturncoxing

For juniors and uncommitted seniors, right now is a great time to reconnect with college coaches. You’ve been racing, have new results, and hopefully have some development updates to share, too!

In addition to updating them on YOU, show genuine interest in THEIR program, too. Follow their season, congratulate them on strong performances, and ask thoughtful questions. Give coaches a chance to get to know you while you get to know their team.

And if reaching out feels intimidating, you’re not alone! Do your research, be thoughtful, proofread your email…and then hit send. You don’t need to navigate every interaction perfectly. Be prepared, be genuine, and be willing to put yourself out there.

Recruiting is a two-way relationship. Focus less on saying the “perfect” thing and more on building a real connection.

As fall racing kicks off, it’s important to transition our approach to coxing to meet the demands of longer races.

Our job is to do more than just keep our boats motivated. It’s to give them the information, direction, and support they need for us to all be successful.

Whether it’s steering the shortest course, finding opportunities to improve boat speed, or making thoughtful calls that keeps your crew engaged, every decision and call that you make is an opportunity to add value from the coxswain seat.

And just as importantly, it’s an opportunity to build TRUST. When your rowers know they can rely on you to make smart decisions, give meaningful feedback, and recognize how hard everyone is working collectively, they can focus on doing their job while you do yours.

Up next crushing it in the driver’s seat is rising junior @vivienvalckx !! Adaptability is so important for effective coxswains, and Vivien demonstrated a masterclass for us on how to pivot from @andovercrew this spring to @tbcracing_ this summer without missing a beat… love watching her crush it, level up, and stay relentless. 🤝🤝 by @insideturncoxing

I’ve been getting a lot of questions from you guys asking what to say during fall… feeling like you’re running out of calls, sounding repetitive, or just not knowing what to say during the longer rows.

Here is a little guide I put together for building out your calls and adding more variation while still staying focused on one topic or part of the stroke.

Try writing down the main technical areas you tend to focus on, then underneath each one, make a list of as many different calls as you can think of that reinforce that same idea.

You definitely don’t need to memorize them all! The goal for this is just to build out your toolbox so you have more options in your brain (or in your notebook) for when you need them… The more ways you can communicate the same technical idea, the easier it becomes to keep your calls fresh, rather than running out of things to say and needing to change the focus entirely.

I hope this gives you guys some inspiration for varying your calls, feeling more confident about what to say, and continuing to level up in the boat as fall kicks off !!! by @insideturncoxing

it’s officially fall season — nothing better than getting back on the water with your team !! the start of fall has me missing early fall sunrise practices with my teammates in charlottesville ✨ by @insideturncoxing

When transitioning to a new squad or a new program, it’s important to be ready to learn, observe, and adapt. Doing this will allow you to make the biggest impact, while continuing to build your skills and confidence.

Here are a few tips on how to get up to speed as quickly as possible through your own awareness and through rower and coach feedback.

If you know someone who could benefit from these tools or example questions, pass this along to them! A rising tide lifts all boats…🤝
