Now fully into the school Autumn Term for all things planting. Fun identifying plants from their shadows.

Colour matching garden planting schemes visited in the Summer with buttons, from the button cupboard. One button per one named plant. The contents will be a useful reminder to not deviate when visiting eclectic, engaging and very tempting plant fairs in the next few weeks - GreatDixter / Borde Hill.

Just discovered that seeds in late Summer can take less than a week to germinate with the new idea of sowing between two layers of grit. The mini double layered duvet makes it just warm enough for future pops of magenta in the garden, dianthus carthusianorum seed from a neighbour. It’s not just cress for kids that is quick. Some of the Summer potpourri has been sown at the allotment, some in pots to overwinter in unheated cold frames and some saved for Spring back up.

A grass - a perfect candidate for division to grow more starter plants for a fuller planting scheme.

Sedums, even though they identify differently now are easy to propagate along with so many plants at this time of year.

Rain at the allotment outpost reminded me to dig up some eryngiums and propagate too. As luck would have it on todays’ compost heap a spent flower display jettisoned by the owner revealed some iridescent huge eryngiums, all too ready to be retrieved and sown.

A fortnights rainfall at todays garden was a welcome sight. Self seeded annual nicotianas doing well with last year’s alstromerias.

Exploring all garden options in North West Norfolk. Pitching and pedalling with three days of immersive planting schemes to check over.

With a such an awesome borrowed view at the end of her garden I knew exactly where to take @Jacksatlast.

We meandered around Sandringham Estate with its formal clipped hedges and ancient trees. We sauntered around Houghton Hall Gardens with their stunning colourful borders.

By a country mile Pensthorpe’s Millennium Garden by Piet Ouldolf came out tops as I knew it would. Naturalistic plantings blending into the surrounding wetlands.

Back at basecamp we had plenty of time to chat over some ephemeral and practical well thumbed plant choices and listings that will add even more magic to her stunning mere view.

When’s the best time to do a bit of gardening ? When you notice the Summer growth is just right to propagate , when the cuttings have rooted through and you earmark ten minutes. When you know the tail end of Summer is optimum for new root development ahead of Autumn/Winter.

Future deep blues of Salvia Nachtvlinder (Dutch Nacht = night, Linder = butterfly, so Salvia Moth) and future pinks of a favourite penstemon. Topping out the penstemons will make bushier plants.

Chardin eat your heart out. Inspiration comes from all sorts of places. My allotment assemblage to show at The Newick Horticultural Show on The Village Green today 2-4pm. The Allotment class is always a relaxed affair to encourage people to grow and show.

On the flower front Salvia Purple Rain did very well at the no rain and no mains water allotment. Piet Oudolf’s plant recommendations have never gone amiss. And with this spark in mind I’m setting out on a project to whisk up some proper magic with our own garden. Watch this space.

Improving germination and success rates of late Summer collected garden seed.

Best grade potting and sowing compost is n’t always the best. Do n’t get strung along thinking it is. As a successful nurseryman once helpfully told me years ago (he was told in turn by another top nursery hand ) potting compost for seed growing does not need to be a rich mix.

Leftover compost with a gritty base is very effective and often has better results. Use a deep pot, sow sparingly and top off with grit to warm the top layer of soil and to prevent damping off. Once the seedlings are big enough then transplant to a richer compost.

Back to school week. The class of 2026. Eager little faces mixing and mingling and tuning into all things horti.

After the Harvest Festival the gardening year really starts with the new school year. Beginning now rather than leaving it to Spring is really beneficial, especially now with hotter and drier Summers.

Seed collecting, cuttings to take, seeds to sow, butts to check and soil prepping for healthy no rain swards along with knowing which type of grass to grow.

Open Air Gallery.

This week I popped in to #CharelstonGardens near Firle, East Sussex. Always inspiring. Instead of taking photos I noted down all the colour groups of the plants and looked to see if I could conjure up the magic mix at home.

A long list - yellows, whites, oranges, carmines, blues, pinks, burgundies, violets, reds, peaches, purples and silvers, always a focussing thing to do.

Phlox, dahlia, rudbeckia, achillea, evening primrose, verbascum, cosmos, poppy, marigolds, kniphofia, salvia, aster, nepeta, echinops, chicory, larkspur, hollyhocks, sedum, diascia , knautia, anemone, nicotiana, geranium and honesty. And I’m sure there are more.

Short listed to show in an ultra dire no rain Summer. A chair buster of a Pumpkin Crown Prince tapped its roots deeply into much improved allotment soil. It was a favourite grown by fellow Gardener Mark years ago for Newick Park Hotels’ diners and winers.

This weeks garden gleanings. A cup of tea goes a long way. Summers seeds collected and strewn from centres of gardens and not garden centres. Still some gems and jewels up the no mains water allotment.

Soap on a rope ? More like a watering can on a rope hoisting up the h2o. A butt and a half left.

A good opportunity to move the empty butts to a better position ready for any rain dances. Thinking of improving rain collection ahead of next year.

Am sure that all the soil improvements over the years (pretty much anything compostable), has helped enormously through this dry patch.

A very welcome weekend riding and honing bike skills with @joannasippetts and @trackntrail_cycles in the Yorkshire Dales. @JoannaSippetts you did
amazing not being out flanked by the Army guys and putting the hammer down at the end !

Far away from the livid sun.

Allotment inspections passed muster too. Helped by mains water and cooler temperatures.

A weekend spent among like minded nobbly wheelers in the rugged great outdoors. More single track and rugged down-hills than spa break. Both now qualified Level 2 Mountain Bike Instructor Leaders . A big thank you to fellow mountain bikers and especially Dave @trackntrail_cycles for delivering a really enjoyable, very informative and inclusive Leadership course this weekend.
