The Birmingham Chest Clinic is a historic specialist healthcare facility in central Birmingham.

Key Milestones in Its History

• 1930–1932: The Neo-Georgian stone building at 150–152 Great Charles Street Queensway was designed by John P. Osborne & Son and constructed as part of a national public health effort to tackle tuberculosis (TB). It features a relief of Aesculapius by sculptor William Bloye.

1932: The facility officially opened as a purpose-built outpatient clinic for tuberculosis, run directly by the local city council. Early treatments included heliotherapy (sunlight exposure) for TB patients.

1948: Following the creation of the National Health Service (NHS), management of the clinic transitioned to the NHS.

Mid-1970s: While TB remained the primary focus for decades, the clinic began broadening its scope as treatments advanced.

Expansion of Services: The clinic evolved into a major regional center for outpatient respiratory care, treating over 15,000 patients a year. Its scope expanded to include asthma, severe allergies, and occupational lung diseases.

Present Day: Operated under University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, the four-storey landmark continues to run specialist respiratory and occupational lung clinics.

Step back in time at Victoria Square 🏛️✨

Standing tall in the background is Birmingham’s iconic Council House, designed by Yeoville Thomason and built between 1874 and 1879. Its stunning classical facade features a pediment depicting Britannia receiving the manufacturers of Birmingham and intricate mosaics by Salviati of Venice!

In the foreground lies The River by sculptor Dhruva Mistry, unveiled in 1993 when Victoria Square was pedestrianised. The main 1.75-tonne bronze figure sitting at the top represents the life force—though locals affectionately call her "The Floozie in the Jacuzzi"! ⛲

Beneath her in the lower pool sit two bronze statues representing Youth. Encircling the rim are lines from T.S. Eliot’s poem Burnt Norton:

"And the pool was filled with water of sunlight..."

The bronze statue of Joseph Priestley stands proudly in Ratcliff Passage at the Paradise development in central Birmingham.

Location and Return

Current Spot:

The statue is located between Three Chamberlain Square and the historic Town Hall.

Recent Homecoming:

It returned to the city centre in the summer of 2026 after spending a decade in storage during the area's major redevelopment. It shares this newly restored public space with a companion statue of James Watt.

Statue Details

Sculptor and Date: Sculpted by Francis John Williamson, the original marble monument was unveiled in 1874.

Material Change: Because the original marble wore down over time, the figure was recast in a durable bronze in 1951.

Size: The artwork is 2.5 metres tall and sits on a 3-metre plinth, giving it a combined height of 5.5 metres.

Restoration: Specialists at Midland Masonry and Ian Clark Restoration cleaned and repaired the metalwork before its 2026 reinstallation.
