POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Last year in the UK, an incredible 144,000 deaf and disabled people attended live music events. Some venues are now creating safe spaces for audience members with invisible illnesses and viewing platforms at festivals are thriving. And yet when was the last time you saw a BRIT award accepted by an artist in a wheelchair? Or walking with a white stick? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
When Ian Dury and the Blockheads released ‘Spasticus Autisticus’ in 1981 it was banned across the BBC. The song was a direct protest against the notion of the disabled being viewed as a charitable cause. Fast forward to the London Paralympics in 2012, it was performed live on a world stage in front of 8m people. Society’s definition of what is considered beautiful changes with every generation, but an industry which requires a beautiful appearance in order to be palpable to society is one I refuse to cooperate in. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We will only play in venues which have taken an active interest in deaf and disabled audiences and artists. Because if we want society to champion diversity, we need to show what diversity looks like. We need to invite those marginalized by their appearance into the public space and make platforms accessible. Inclusivity is about de-stigmatizing disability in the eyes of others. Because that’s where it primarily exists. ⁣⁣
Live music is one of the most visceral, joyful experiences there is and should be accessible to everyone. The barriers are there to be broken down. by @instagram_parsonz

One month of A Hole To See The Sky Through 🔵

It is said that bands arriving at shows in separate blacked-out cars is a sure sign that they have lost touch. We don’t need to worry about that because we exclusively take public transport. It means we can’t be held responsible for being late to soundcheck and the sound of the trains helps drown out the tinnitus.

Last day of tracking the album with @leoabrahams at his home studio, built on top of a WW2 air raid shelter. As well as being a sonic sensei, Leo keeps his studio at precisely the optimum temperature at all times (equally important). Kaps had to run for the train.

We’ve never been able to resist attending album mastering sessions. There’s something about being there for that tender moment before the cast goes into the furnace. @Felixldd has the Midas touch and is truly a chip off the old block (his dad, the late great John Davis mastered many of our albums).

Director extraordinaire @jamesslaterjames observing the sky whilst shooting our live sessions at James Turrell’s otherworldly skyspace at Tremenheere sculpture park in Penzance. We’ve been huge fanboys of his work since his early Coral videos. He’s working on a feature and has immaculate taste in plaid.

A Hole To See @Robbiewilliams Through, Firenze Rocks. Our first show playing the new songs live and a baptism by fire. The charisma which emanates from this lad is something to behold and his backstage parties put Beyonce to shame. Top boy.

Re-learning songs long after they have been recorded can be confusing business. But one of the distinct advantages about having twins in the band is that Ed and Ollie cannot only read each other’s thoughts but also swap hands. As you will witness here the results are often seamless.

To launch the album, we threw an art party in Dalston with recreations of some of @yokoono’s iconic interactive artworks. Participants each received a goodie bag with a bingo card and collected little pieces of sky for each artwork they took part in. We learned that everybody enjoys unleashing their inner child (and free pizza).

Art has always been a big inspiration for @mysteryjets. The band’s most recent album, ‘A Hole To See The Sky Through’ shares its name with Yoko Ono’s work of the same name, and takes influence from her recent London exhibition.

For frontman Blaine Harrison (@instagram_parsonz), creative inspiration is everywhere. He’s given us an inside look with a list of his favourite art spots in London, including @barbicancentre, @gerryspompeii, @atlantisartuk, @benwilsonchewinggumman’s ‘studio’ on Millenium Bridge and @eelpieislandartists.

For episode 91 I’m joined by a genuine indie hero...

From the ACTUAL, LITERAL Mystery Jets..... it’s Blaine Harrison!!!

Mystery Jets really are one of “those” bands aren’t they? For over 20 years their music has been a constant in my life and been there to soundtrack the moments of heartbreak, joy, melancholy and everything in between that every Millennial has been through.

Now with new album A Hole To See The Sky Through set for release on the 21st of August, there’s a new batch of incredible songs that we get to make new memories to.

In the episode we talk all about getting Yoko’s approval on the absolutely massive sounding new record, touring with Arctic Monkeys on the NME Awards tour in 2006 and we also deep dive the bonkers world of The Coral’s debut album.

Mystery Jets are on an instore tour this August and a full UK tour in November with a huge show at Kentish Town Forum.

See you down the front?

An Evening To See the Sky Through.

An intimate album playback we hosted @lanzaroteworks featuring a Q&A with @lisaannewright and a series of interactive art pieces inspired by @yokoono’s seminal 1964 instructional book, Grapefruit.

A lovely way to introduce the record to the world. Watch the full length video over on YouTube right now.

See you at the in-stores 🔵✈️
