15 years ago today I was cuddling with a 5lb blonde peanut for the first time. Every year after that, we got to meet a new Arthur who had new interests, new style, new talents- but always still, my sweet little guy. I’m so proud of you and of who you are becoming…Thank you for still holding my hand, @arthurnakoa33 HAPPY wonderful BIRTHDAY to my 15 year old peanut! 🥜 by @instakapuanani

Yeah, I skipped Inverness. What can you do?!

There wasn’t enough time! I had really wanted to get to the Cranogh Centre which is an open air museum dedicated to teaching about the Iron Age folks who occupied the area. I also had planned on eating lunch in Pitlochry a cutie cute village close by too. But after hours of highway driving in the rain, I pulled off to take a nap on a country side road and ended up at the Dalwhinnie Distillery for a little dram. Hullo, fate!

Here’s some pics of the cutie cute town of Pitlochry that I walked around in just as it was closing up. If you go in the summer they have huge theatre festival that is supported by all of the obvious famous Scottish actors you can think of. Next up…a haunted Inn! taken in Pitlochry, Scotland by @instakapuanani

I do not have long feet and these stairs were precarious even for me! Top floors were living, the main entry for meeting and then If you follow me down, you’ll see the store room in the basement. There lie samples of grinding stones, stone gutters (very important in rainy Scotland) and the carved stonework that used to cover the castle. You’ll notice the stairs switched directions which was extremely disorienting partially because they also got smaller. by @instakapuanani

Come explore the 1509 castle tower with me! Home to the Grant Clan. It was destroyed by a storm in 1700s. The second clip showing Loch Ness is of the oldest part of Urquhart castle- 1300s! by @instakapuanani

Scotland! Day 4 began well caffeinated after leaving Cluanie Inn for a drive along Loch Ness over to Urquhart Castle. I had so much I wanted to do this day, but once again- I spent way too much time peering out every ancient stone window in search of Nessie and talking to the docent for an extended period of time. This crumbly castle is built upon an older stronghold which the English eventually blew up so as not to leave it to the Jacobites. Even though it was already crumbling and hard to maintain. There was a great raid here before that which the MacDonald clan emptied much of everything including thousands of sheep and cattle and even doors and hinges (see illustration). After they blew up the main gate, the townsfolk came and took all the good carved and 90 degree angle stonework for their own homes so much of this is rebuilt. It’s very hard to imagine these places in their prime, but seeing little details like an in castle latrine and delicate artifacts they’ve found buried helps.

For the record, Loch Ness is hard to get to with only a few access points or even places to stop on the road. The legend of it all may be a bit over exaggerated thanks to Hollywood. I apologize to @radishranch for not getting a rock for you here but lady, there were some steps! And I’d already climbed many that day. Onward! by @instakapuanani

First opened in 1787, the Cluanie Inn (pronounced Cloony) was once home to cattle drovers, construction crews building the King’s Road to Skye. Arriving was like seeing a warm light in the darkening cold mist. I stopped here after the torrential downpour at Sligachan Bridge and was welcomed with open arms. Look at my cute room with all the plaid! After a hot shower and crawling into one of their robes I got ready for dinner. The menu was a mix of Scottish faves and Indian dishes. I settled on a turmeric manhattan, the tastiest chicken tikka pizza and my book. Later on that night they delivered to my room, a warm bread pudding that I covered in cream. A little bit of computer work…a little bit of a movie, and I settled in for a stormy night before making my way to Loch Ness and a long drive the next day. This was by far my favorite Inn in Scotland and was run by the nicest of Indian families. One who for breakfast the next day, happily refilled my cup of coffee no less than 4 times. They have a spa and hot tub and all that which I would have loved to gone to had I been staying @cluanieinn @blacksheephotelscabins by @instakapuanani

Thanks for following along on Day 3 of this lady on a solo trip to the Highlands of Scotland. Two places I wanted to get to on this trip was Glencoe and the Isle of Skye. The latter of which is an enchanted place of fairies, glens and legends - a must do! However, due to the weather l got to only partially do these things. By noon I made it to the very wintry and not lush green at all, valley of Glencoe which was carved out of glaciers and a partial volcano, I believe. There is history of the MacDonald Clan being massacred here but the visitor’s center only mentioned the geography of it all. Though a very eye opening short film about slaves escaping into the valley never to be seen again was showing.
The majesty of the place was still lovely and there was a bag piper on site for the eager tourists which made it all the more dreamy. I picked up a rock for @radishranch and took a nice hike in search of the location of Hagrid’s hut of Harry Potter TM fame.
And as I am wont to do, slipped and fell into the mushy landscape soon after and discovered my pants were NOT waterproof as advertised.
On to the famous Eilean Donan castle as they closed up for the day which just meant it was free to walk around finally then to Isle of Skye in the whipping rain!
I had high hopes to see the Ol Man of Storr but as the dark approached and the winds got worse, I smartly settled for the old bridge of Sligachan which bridges over enchanted fairy waters which will bring eternal beauty if you put your face in it for 7 seconds. You’ll be happy to know my finger is forever beautiful as that is all I could bear. by @instakapuanani

One day 2, I left Glasgow and headed north to the Argyll coast. Alongside Loch Lomand and over to my first castle. Kilchurn Castle is a majestic 15th-century ruin situated in a cow pasture on the end of Loch Awe. Originally built as a stronghold for the powerful Clan Campbell you can walk around it but not in it. I stopped at Loch Long to eat the sandwich I’d snagged from that morning’s hotel buffet before heading to Inveraray along Loch Fyne to see my next castle but sadly it was CLOSED. You’ll have to google that 17th century beauty yourself (seen above here)

Most towns seem to close up by 3pm and the one vintage shop in Inveraray was closed due to it being a slow day. After navigating around a fairly large Scottish biker clan (it literally said “Clan” on their leather coats) I set off for my hotel in Oban and arrived to the ocean air and the most sunny and beautiful room. There were so many charming places to choose from but Corran Guest House had a lively bar on site that had a recommended Sunday Roast and promised music (except Sundays when I was there -oops). Sipped a dram of Oban Whisky as recommended from @kellleesmith and a beer. I didn’t get to stay long the next day except to walk around in the mist a bit and grab coffee before heading to Glencoe the next morning. by @instakapuanani

First stop: Glasgow. I was only here for about 24 hours before I rented a car and drove to the Highlands. But before then, I rode a bike to the oldest house in Glasgow, walked to the Glasgow Cathedral (hello! Statue of the David Livingstone) and walked over the Bridge of Sighs to the Necropolis where wealthy merchants found their rest. First pic is actually the grave of the author of Wee Willie Winkie! Later I ended up watching a local Glasgow soccer/football team win and that was a lot of fun. Not wanting to end the night just yet, I bicycled over to a bar that had live music and met some very sweet locals who bought me whisky and beer. Short but sweet time for my first day there. by @instakapuanani
