Nearly thirty years ago I met a young teacher when we had both been roped in to help out with a series of exhibitions - not art or music - more carrot peeler and miracle mop.
I did the selling and she did front of house, having a polish that I didn’t (still don’t) have.
We had great craic among the vegetable peelers and sharp dealers, as we did over the years since when our paths crossed in different arenas.
She was a lady who promoted everyone but herself, seeing the joy in everything and the potential in everyone,
A huge loss to Conor and all who loved her, and to Cork which is so much poorer for her passing ❤️

A tale of two Kates!
Still slightly stunned - and absolutely delighted - to have received the Kate O’Riordan Award for Short Fiction at Kenmare Arts Festival. Huge thanks to Kate O’Riordan, John Goode, John Brennan and everyone involved in making the festival so special. by @instakatedurrant

Here’s a little story about a mug and my dad and coincidence, or maybe about something else that is more than mugs and dads and coincidences.

I was lucky enough to have my dad live with me for the last year of his life and one of the few things that came with him, along with hundreds of pictures of trains, was a set of four bone china mugs.

Not particularly nice mugs but, as Dad reminded me on more than one occasion, they were expensive mugs that he had purchased one at a time over a series of weeks.

My lovely dad died in 2006 and the mugs, which I really didn’t like, remained in the cupboard. Every time I took them out, intending to take them to the charity shop, I could see Dad carefully choosing a mug, week after week, and back into thew cupboard they went.

Finally, I Marie Kondo’d them, thanked them for their service and, with no small tug in the chest, handed them in to the local charity shop.

The following month, during a meeting in a warehouse, I opened the cupboard in the canteen to take out a mug for coffee, only to find Dad’s mugs staring at me.

Not mugs like them, but the exact mugs.

That same set of four mugs Dad had chosen so carefully, week after week, all those years ago.

No one knew where they had come from or how they happened to be there so, needless to say, the mugs are now home, where they belong, and I’m sitting watching the sun rise and enjoying a cup of tea with my dad. by @instakatedurrant

I’ve known Damian for a long time. Over the years, I’ve watched him pick up litter, paint churches, put up signs, lay out tea lights at two o’clock in the morning, and organise parades, awards, clean-ups, and so much more.

More likely to be found in a hi-vis vest than a suit, he’s always the first to offer help and the last to go home, making sure every last cable tie is removed and every sign is packed away.

A true community man.

They say behind every great man is a wonderful woman, and Damian couldn’t have achieved all he has without his lovely wife, Brenda, and his two fabulous children Kate and Simon by his side.

Congratulations to my dear friends, Damian and Brenda — or, as you shall now be known, the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Cork.

Love you both ❤️
