SF Oasis is back.
⠀
SoMa’s drag institution reopened Friday after a seven-month renovation and a last-minute rescue. I’ve been to enough of these homecomings to brace for a fire-marshal crush. This wasn’t that. Tickets ran around forty bucks, the reopening reportedly sold out in five hours with none held at the door, and the room could actually breathe. The crowd moved together from space to space, one emptying as the next filled, up to the roof and back.
⠀
The glow-up is real: a gold-tiled bar, new murals, a crocodile-textured wall upstairs, plastic plant walls for selfies, mirrors everywhere, and cushy roof chairs paired with 1950s salon hair dryers. It leans hard into maximalist Moulin Rouge cabaret, though the building at 298 11th St. is still gritty underneath, the Alan Cumming “Cabaret” kind of glamour. Old-timers reminisced about the venue’s past life, when it was Splash and had an actual, unsanitary pool.
⠀
Here’s how it survived. Last July, D’Arcy Drollinger announced Oasis would close on New Year’s Day, done in by thin post-pandemic crowds and margins that never cleared zero. Then a multimillion-dollar gift arrived from Mary and Mark Stevens, whose son Sky is a regular, letting the nonprofit Oasis Arts buy the building outright, reportedly for $3.5 million. Drollinger calls this the third iteration: the 2010s opening with the late Heklina, the post-pandemic return, and now the one where Oasis holds its own keys.
⠀
The save-the-place nights last year were thick with drag royalty. Friday was a younger crowd, just flatly glad the place is back. Honestly, it looked like the Oasis D’Arcy always dreamed about. This time it feels like it’s here to stay.
