#Tunga's works are featured in the summer group exhibition 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 at Lisson (@lisson_gallery), on view through 5 September at 27 Bell Street, London. ‎ "A visceral trace of the body can be experienced through these works, that is produced by their collision of the past and present. They are transformed into reflections on cultural continuity, memory and time. The works from the 𝘼𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙨 𝙈𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙨 series (2011–2012) make permanent the ephemeral state of the made-up face, challenging the permanence of physical memory. The series is presented alongside two sculptures, 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 (𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙨), 2014/2017 and 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥, 2008. These works exemplify the artist’s research into material energies and their capacity to act as portals between time-based realities." ‎ [1-2 cards] Exhibition views ‎ [3-4 cards] A set of six works on paper, 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 from the series 𝘼𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙨 𝙈𝙖𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙖𝙙𝙤𝙨, 2011–2012 Watercolour and make-up on cotton paper Framed: 56 x 43 x 3 cm | 22 x 16 7⁄8 x 1 1⁄8 in ‎ [5-6 cards] 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥, 2008 Bronze, crystal, pearl and ceramics 22 x 80 x 22 cm | 8 5⁄8 x 31 1⁄2 x 8 5⁄8 in ‎ [7-9 cards] 𝘜𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘥 (𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙥𝙝𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡𝙨), 2014/2017 Silver patinated bronze 53 x 41 x 44 cm | 20 7⁄8 x 16 1⁄8 x 17 3⁄8 in ed. 2 of 3 + 2APs ‎ © Tunga Institute, Rio de Janeiro ‎ Photos: Courtesy Lisson / Sebastiano Pellion di Persano by @institutotunga

[Cards translation] Tunga’s Studies I usually show the last part of a project, which is the installation. But I’ve found out that the mediations are just as important as the last moment. They can bring light to the work. Tunga said he took a deeper dive into the usual questions. This “sea of doubts” is the old “space” that has to be “built”; “occupied” and so on. – It’s foolish to discuss the installation as an occupation of space, says Tunga, without the quotation marks. – In doing so, one avoids discussing the work in order to discuss a style or genre. If they ask me if I'm painting, I'll tell them I'm making tiny skinny sculptures. The “Preliminares…” , start out with Tunga delimiting areas in the handmade paper, measuring 70 centimeters by 1.30 meters. Afterwards, he strokes it with oil paint, for example. Following that, he throws dollops of water in some parts. The paper absorbs the water and the paint transfers to the other side. – The paper works as a coffee filter, he compares. – I work with both sides until I decide which of them is going to be the main one. But the artwork can be seen from whichever side, much like a sculpture. 🗃️ #TUNGA ARCHIVE | We have digitized the article about the Tunga's exhibition "Preliminares do Palíndromo Incesto" at GB Arte (Rio de Janeiro) O GLOBO, 17 July 1991 by Carla Lencastre Photo (1): Carlos Magno Photo (2): Jaime Acioli by @institutotunga

It is with great enthusiasm that the 𝗧𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗲 and 𝗟𝘂𝗵𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 announce the acquisition of the work Vê-nus (1976) by the 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 (𝙈𝘾𝘼 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙜𝙤). The artist's relationship with the museum was first established by the historic solo exhibition 𝘖𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 37: 𝘛𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘢, curated by Bruce Guenther in 1989-1990, when the artist presented his installation 𝘓𝘦𝘻𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘝. The acquisition of the work Vê-nus, which will now be part of one of the most important contemporary art collections, represents an important milestone in the preservation and dissemination of Tunga's legacy. "Vê-nus has as its central issue a circular system of language, in which there is no waste. In each object the parts are repeated, presenting a new experience. A continuous surface, a cutting line separates a closed region. This cut forms a figure that becomes disjunctive. Halway up the chain, a band is a Moebius strip and is equivalent to the perimeter of the cut of the form. Recomposing the original scene of the continuous black surface is a mental operation equal to the energy of the cut. The form could very well allude to a shell or a comb..." – Tunga Vê-nus, 1976 Rubber, light bulb, electrical equipment, metal, and plastic fly 72 1/16 x 98 7/16 x 36 5/8 in.
