Remembering events on the the eve of the annexation of Crime almost 12 years ago, which was the actual begining of the war in Ukraine and a lead up to the full scale invasion in 2022. When former president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych fled the country after the Maidan revolution, Russia claimed that ethnic Russians in Crimea were under threat. They deployed armed men in unmarked green military uniforms across Crimea to take over government and military facilities. Denying they were Russian troops at first, but later Putin admitted they were. At the same time organising a sham referendum under military occupation on March 16th with a result of 95% voting for joing Russia. Nationalist opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki, who emphasized his Catholic faith throughout his campaign and vowed to curb migration, narrowly secured victory in Poland’s presidential election. Approximately four in five farmers from smaller villages cast their votes for the conservative candidate, alongside more than two-thirds of manual laborers. The Crimean Tatar community in Bakhchysarai on the eve of the 2014 annexation of Crimea. I could feel the uncertainty and fear as attacks began and leaders of their community started disappearing. I accompanied them on their neighborhood night patrols as they tried to protect their families from pro Russian provocations. by @instkaminski
