On 12 October, Insulate Ukraine joined with our partners at British Expertise International and The D Group (Strategy International) to bring Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk to London for a private discussion with Robin MacKenzie, Managing Director, The D Group and CEO of Strategy International, on Ukraine’s resilience, human rights and long-term recovery.

As head of the @center_for_civil_liberties, Oleksandra continues to advocate for accountability, the protection of civilians and human dignity amid Russia’s ongoing war.

Our sincere thanks to British Expertise International and The D Group (Strategy International) and Robin MacKenzie for hosting this important conversation and for their continued partnership and support. taken in London, United Kingdom by @insulate_ukraine

Every week, our teams share what they’re seeing on the ground.

This week’s update covers the security situation in Sloviansk, Nikopol, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa, where civilians continue to live and rebuild amid sustained Russian attacks.

Our teams are reporting a sharp deterioration in Kharkiv, where guided aerial bombs and cruise missiles struck the city’s infrastructure and FPV drones attacked civilian vehicles. In Nikopol, the situation worsened again, with heavy shelling. In Sloviansk, FPV drones targeted vehicles in the city and on logistics routes, while guided aerial bombs hit residential buildings on the outskirts.

In Zaporizhzhia, Shahed drones and cruise missiles targeted the city’s infrastructure. In Odesa, Shahed drones attacked the city center and its infrastructure.

Despite these conditions, our local teams continue working to help families repair damaged homes and prepare for the winter ahead.

As temperatures begin to fall, we are working non-stop to help Ukrainian civilians keep their homes safe, warm, and habitable through the months ahead.

Meet Petrykivka painting, one of Ukraine’s most beautiful folk traditions.

In the village of Petrykivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region, almost every family has someone who paints. For more than two centuries, people here have decorated their homes with bright flowers, berries and birds. It started on the walls of houses: women repainted them once or twice a year. Later the patterns moved onto paper, wooden chests and porcelain.

Traditional brushes were made from cat hair, berries are painted with a fingertip, and the first paints came from cherries, sunflowers and snowdrops mixed with egg yolk.

In 2013, UNESCO added Petrykivka painting to the list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. Today it is still taught in local schools and passed down in families.

Our teams work across the Dnipropetrovsk region, keeping homes warm in towns not far from where this tradition was born.

Nadiia is a mother to ten children in a family-type children’s home in Vysokyi, Kharkiv Oblast.

The children came into her family after being left without parental care. Nadiia and most of the family were displaced from the Kupiansk district by the war; two of the girls came from the Lyptsi area, close to the Russian border.

“When a child comes into a family, they come specifically to be loved, and to feel that they are truly children here, a daughter, a son,” Nadiia told me. “It is an ordinary family, just a large one.”

I met Nadiia and the children while visiting their home with Insulate Ukraine, which had recently repaired windows damaged by the war.

Happy World Bread Day!

In Ukraine, bread has always meant welcome and home. Guests are greeted with bread and salt, and a loaf on the table means that life goes on. This winter, a warm loaf and a warm room to share it in mean more than ever.

Today we’re celebrating together with two people and teams we admire:

@bake.for.ukraine runs mobile bakeries that bake traditional palyanytsya and rye bread and bring it to villages in southern Ukraine.

@felicityspector, journalist and author of Bread and War: A Ukrainian Story of Food, Bravery and Hope, tells how Ukrainians keep baking, cooking and feeding each other through the war.

And we at Insulate Ukraine install free emergency windows in war-damaged homes, so families can stay warm and keep the daylight in.

Bread on the table and warmth at home: two simple things that help families get through the hardest winter.

Can a short video about kindness help keep a family warm this winter? Yes, and you can be part of it.

We’re taking part in the #GoodExistsChallenge by Greater Good Charities. Film a 1 to 3 minute TikTok about any act of kindness (it doesn’t have to be about us), post it publicly, tag @greatergoodcharities and @insulate_ukraine, add #goodexistschallenge, then fill in the entry form and choose Insulate Ukraine as your charity.

Videos are accepted until 23 October, and public voting runs from 29 October to 5 November. The winning charity receives $50,000, second place $20,000, and three more charities receive $10,000 each.

Every prize would help us install more emergency windows in war-damaged homes before the coldest months. Open to 18+.

Insulate Ukraine Testimonials: Tetiana | Nikopol

“I really like it. I can see that neither wind nor damp gets through. You’ve done a great job!”

Tetiana’s window and balcony door had been boarded up with OSB. Boards keep the wind out, but they keep the light out too. Now her balcony has windows again.

For Insulate Ukraine, our work is more than just windows. It’s about giving Ukrainians the chance to return home, to remain home, and to create a home where they are.

Our emergency replacement windows are insulating, weather-sealing and shatterproof. They are easy to install and provided free to Ukrainians in need. Unlike OSB boards and other coverings, they let the light in.

Autumn is here, and cold is coming fast. Help us protect homes. Donate via the link in our bio.

Word of the Week 🇺🇦

ТУРБОТА [TUR-BO-TA] - CARE.

Care rarely looks dramatic. It looks like a coordinator remembering an elderly woman's name, or a crew showing up on the exact day they promised, even when the roads are bad and the weather isn't.

Every window we install carries that same quiet care - someone noticed, someone followed up, and someone was helped. It's not a grand gesture. It's just consistency, over and over.

This week’s update covers the security situation in Sloviansk, Nikopol, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa, where civilians continue to live and rebuild amid sustained Russian attacks.

In Kharkiv, the situation worsened compared to last week. Guided aerial bombs and cruise missiles struck the city, while FPV drones attacked civilian vehicles. In Sloviansk, FPV drones targeted the outskirts and logistics routes, and guided aerial bombs hit residential buildings. Nikopol continued to face moderate-intensity shelling.

In Zaporizhzhia, Shahed drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles targeted the city’s infrastructure. In Odesa, Shahed drones scored direct hits on high-rise residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.

Despite these conditions, our local teams continue working to help families repair damaged homes and prepare for the winter ahead.

We were privileged to welcome Oleksandra Matviichuk, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, human rights lawyer, and Head of the Centre for Civil Liberties, for a St Laurence Lecture titled Faith Under Fire: Religious Freedom and Human Dignity in Occupied Ukraine.

Drawing on her extraordinary work documenting war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine, Oleksandra shared deeply moving accounts of the individuals and communities affected by Russia's invasion and occupation. Through their stories, she brought home the human cost of war, the persecution of religious communities, and the courage of those who continue to defend human dignity, freedom, and justice. She was joined by Old Amplefordian Harry Blakiston Houston (EW2013), founder of @Insulate_Ukraine, and Alexi Guedroitz, whose work together supporting communities affected by the war is a powerful example of compassion translated into practical action.

Their reflections, and the questions that followed, challenged us to consider the role of faith and community in times of persecution and our shared responsibility to uphold the dignity of every human being.

It was an immensely moving and thought-provoking occasion, reminding us that behind every account of conflict and suffering are real people, whose lives and stories must never be forgotten. Our sincere thanks to Oleksandra, Harry and Alexi for their generosity, courage and witness, and to the many pupils, parents, staff, Old Amplefordians and members of the wider community who joined us.

In September, our team in Nikopol was installing windows at a local school when a drone hit the roof of the building.

Our builders took shelter together with the teachers, and everyone is safe. After further shelling in the area, the work at the school was paused for security reasons.

Nikopol sits on the Dnipro river, right across from occupied territory, and this is the reality our teams work in every day: keeping homes and schools warm while the attacks continue.

Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible. #InsulateUkraine #Nikopol #Ukraine #StandWithUkraine
