The origins of the samurai trace back to early feudal Japan.

During the Heian period (794–1185), powerful landowners began hiring armed warriors to protect their estates and enforce control over rural territories. Over time, these warriors formed a distinct military class.

By the late 12th century, after the Genpei War (1180–1185), the rise of Minamoto no Yoritomo led to the establishment of the Kamakura shogunate in 1192, marking the beginning of formal samurai rule. From that point on, samurai became the ruling military elite of Japan for nearly 700 years.

Their identity was shaped by loyalty, discipline, martial skill, and later by the ethical code known as Bushidō. Though the samurai class was officially abolished during the Meiji Restoration in the late 19th century, their legacy continues to influence Japanese culture and aesthetics today.
