The final year students in the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) will present their Research Major Projects next week!

The final year is a year-long, self-directed design research inquiry in which students develop and explore their motivations for interior design through a specific project, context and area of investigation. It is an opportunity to question, experiment, speculate and take creative risks, bringing together ideas, research and design thinking.

We are excited to celebrate this significant milestone and hear about the diverse ideas, critical perspectives and creative approaches emerging from this year's cohort.

Students will present their projects to a panel of academic and industry guest panellists on Wednesday 4, Thursday 5 and Friday 6 November on Level 5 of the RMIT Design Hub.

The projects will also be showcased at INDEX 2026, an exhibition celebrating the work of graduating students from the Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) and Master of Interior Design programs.

Congratulations to my Practice Technologies 4 students in "Sense & Sensibility: Chapter 2" who completed their Week 10 Final Presentation reviews this week! 👏

This design led Tech 4 courses asks 3rd year @interiordesign.rmit students to select a vacant inner-city shopfront and reimagine it as a pop-up or satellite public library. Most of the class was learning to use Revit for the first time, in addition to software tutoring and troubleshooting; we covered prinicipals of acoustics and acoustic design; wellbeing, sensory comfort and inclusive universal design; NCC and AS1428.1 requirements for public libraries; detailing and interior construction systems; ambitious, dignified and critically engaged interior design for diverse publics.

It's been a huge semester and I'm really proud of the effort and commitment shown by the class.

Last push until Week 12 Folios now! by @interiordesign.rmit

Congratulations to Xiaoni Bai, who won the 2026 Design Institute of Australia GOTYA (Graduate of the Year Award) in the categories of:

• PLACE (Higher Education) State Category Winner — VIC
• National PLACE Category Winner (Higher Education)
• VIC Overall Graduate of the Year

Xiaoni's project, titled Re:member, is a dementia-inclusive urban village that rethinks care by redeveloping Guildford Lane into familiar, everyday spatial networks. It integrates memory, routine, and community within a connected urban fabric, supporting cognitive continuity, autonomy, and dignity. The project explores how adaptive interior and architectural systems can sustain belonging and lived experience over time.

Thanks to the support of final year tutors: Raphael Kilpatrick, Dr James Carey, Kate Geck, Wendy Lasica, Pip McCully, Djurdjica Kesic, Dr Andy Miller

Thanks to the @design_institute_au for providing an opportunity for emerging designers to be recognised and promoted, and to Stylecraft and Dulux for supporting these awards.

Students in the 2nd and 3rd Year Interior Design Studio, Leisure LAB, led by Alis Garlick, recently visited the MAAP LaB Store in Collingwood.

Oliver Duff, Director of Architecture at Clare Cousins Architecture, spoke with students about the practice’s approach to design and the ideas behind MAAP’s new flagship store.

Set within the industrial fabric of Collingwood, the store balances machined precision with material rawness. The building’s concrete and blockwork shell is deliberately exposed, while a highly finished steel perimeter defines the spatial organisation of the store.

A series of objects, insertions and details create the atmosphere of a meticulous workshop — bringing together design, performance and cycling to create a space for community.

A great opportunity for students to connect studio learning with contemporary design practice and hear from the designer the thinking behind a project.

Please join us for a talk by Igor Siddiqui

Contingent Communities

Tuesday 14 July
6pm to 7pm
RMIT Design Hub
150 Victoria St, Carlton
Level 3 Lecture Theatre

Igor Siddiqui is an architect, creative scholar, and Program Director for Interior Design at The University of Texas at Austin. He is the author of Oblique Experiments: Claude Parent’s Architectural Installations (1969-1975) (AR+D. 2025).
•
In his lecture titled “Contingent Communities,” Siddiqui reflects on his experimental practice and the people, places, materials, and ideas that by design become part of it. Siddiqui considers his trajectory through the lens of what Paul Virilio refers to as “traceability”. From material lifecycles to the French architect Claude Parent’s traveling installations from the 1970s, Siddiqui’s work identifies circulation as a common trace across a diverse body of work—and a convincing conceptual alibi for creative practice.
