Painter, writer and curator Estelle Simpson works from her studio in South London @the_koppel_project. There, her human, animal, and inanimate subjects come alive under her delicate brush.

Drawing from the rich histories of Surrealist and Symbolist art, and that of balletic performance, Simpson’s artistic process is intentionally internal. She paints entirely from her mind’s eye, forgoing sitters, life models, and photographs. Her practice centers around juxtaposing the world of performance against the quotidian of everyday life, blurring the boundaries between mythical and natural. Simpson creates a fantasy out of the mundane, setting an otherworldly stage for the pleasures and struggles we once thought we knew.

Simpson rents her studio from The Koppel Project, an arts charity, gallery, and creative hub in London that supports early and mid-career artists by offering affordable studio spaces.

in June Alessandro visited my studio to discuss my group of paintings created for my second solo survey. These are some passages from our conversation. Alessandro led the discussion, and I guided him through some of my influences, current thoughts, and specific motifs.

Further, in his retrospective essay, Alessandro has provided such a cohesive retelling of my often, to use his word ‘chimerical’ practice. @plasticfloret
