During the past month I worked on improving my in-flight shooting skills by photographing fast-flying birds.

Some of my subjects were killdeer, and photographing them in flight is quite a challenge. Because they do not fly in straight lines, dart, change course abruptly and unpredictably, weave through the air at high speeds, they are one of the most difficult birds to shoot in flight.

Over the time I spent many days trying to photograph them, and managed some decent shots which I deemed not good enough though... I didn't give up and lately my success rate improved significantly. I guess practice makes perfect, but it took a lot of time in the field to finally get the shots that I was looking for.

A first series of killdeer shots, with the first one being my favorite - I like the killdeer's hawk-like flight posture.

Two Long-eared Owl siblings.
Juvenile long-eared owls can appear very curious and hyper-aware of people or new things in their environment. They often stare directly at humans with wide eyes, which can look like intense curiosity.
Once a young owl assesses a person and realizes they are not a threat, they typically lose interest, close their eyes, and go back to sleep or resting.

Young Peregrine falcon hunting very low along the river bank.

While famous for their high-speed aerial dives from thousands of feet in the air, peregrines are versatile hunters. When hunting near water, or rivers, they frequently fly just a few feet above the surface or low along the banks. This low flight lets them surprise waterbirds and shorebirds resting on the water.

A bird that lost its way and somehow turned up in the area - a few shots of the now famous juvenile Little Blue Heron with a catch, and projecting its shadow against the rock behind it.

Juveniles European Long-eared Owl ( the cousin of the North-American one, basically the same species).
I managed a few photographs of three of the four siblings together, hiding in a dense, old willow tree.
