We’ve seen the office romance play out on our screens for years — but what happens when the person you build a career alongside becomes the person you build a life with?

A recent Forbes Advisor survey of 2,000 employed Americans found that workplace relationships can affect much more than your workday, from work-life balance to individuality. And for the high-achieving couples I work with, that distinction between “we” and “me” is an important part of intimacy. Being deeply connected doesn’t require becoming indistinguishable.

If you and your partner work together, how do you protect the space between “we” and “me”?

We often assume that we and our partner have the same understanding of what intimacy means. And then we expect them to know how to create it for us. 🫠

Sometimes, we’re asking our partners to be mind readers without realizing it. We want them to know what makes us feel close, what makes us feel desired, what helps us soften and open up—but we haven’t always taken the time to understand or communicate those things ourselves.

And this is where the dynamic can start to play into itself. 🔄

I don’t feel intimate with you, so I pull away. You feel me pulling away, so you pull away too. We both want more connection, but neither of us is quite sure what the other person needs to get there.

So I want you to get curious about your own definition of intimacy. ✨ What does it feel like? What does it look like? What does it sound like? What does it smell like? What does it taste like?

How do you experience intimacy through all of your senses?

Before we can expect our partner to create an experience that brings us into intimacy, we have to have some understanding of what that experience actually is for us.

Feeling like roommates isn’t necessarily about how much sex you’re having. 👀

More often than not, it’s about disconnection—the routines, unresolved hurt, and emotional distance that can leave you feeling like you’re living beside each other instead of with each other.

I’ve spent nearly 15 years working with couples as an LMFT and a certified sex therapist, including through the intensive in-person retreats we offer with IntimacyMoons. I know that couples can genuinely want to reconnect and still not know where to begin. And sometimes, an intensive retreat or ongoing therapy isn’t accessible or realistic in the moment.

It’s one of the reasons I created our IntimacyMoons courses: to give couples expert-guided tools and resources they can work through at their own pace, wherever they are in their relationship.

Roommates to Lovers: The Intimacy Reset is designed to help you understand the roots of disconnection, strengthen communication, and begin rebuilding intimacy. 🔥🔥🔥

You don’t have to wait for the “perfect” time to start turning toward each other again.

Get into this and our other course offerings. Link in bio.

How often should couples have sex?

I get this question a lot, and I think we put way too much emphasis on recommending how often couples “should” be having sex. The truth of the matter is, there is no universal number.

For some couples, having sex a thousand times a day, every day, all day works for them. They both want it, they both have agency, they both express desire, and that’s their rhythm.

For another couple, sex once or twice a month might feel really connected and fulfilling.

And that rhythm can change, too. Maybe one person is traveling. Maybe work is intense. Maybe you’re in a season where you’re craving more connection. Maybe you’re not.

Every relationship is going to have its own rhythm.

So rather than using a recommended number as a bar you have to live up to, I want couples to get curious about what actually works for them:

💕 What does my natural desire look like for me?
💕 What does our rhythm look like together?
💕 Do we both feel connected, wanted, and fulfilled?

That’s the start of a much more meaningful conversation than asking whether you’re having “enough” sex.

Hot take: Staying after a breach of trust can be an act of strength, too. And don’t come for me in the comments 😂 because I know this one can be unpopular.

As a couples therapist for nearly 15 years and through my work with couples at IntimacyMoons retreats, I’ve worked with people in 10- and 20-year marriages who come to us not because they’ve decided to leave, but because they want to understand what happened, rebuild trust, and explore whether their relationship can be repaired.

The nuance is that not every person who experiences infidelity, financial dishonesty, withholding or another breach of trust wants to leave. Staying does not automatically mean a lack of strength, boundaries, or agency. And to be clear, I’m NOT talking about relationships where there is abuse, coercion, power or control.

I’m talking about the complicated reality of two people who have been hurt and are trying to make a hard decision about what comes next.

Leaving is hard. Staying is also hard. There is more than one path forward, and we need more nuance, compassion and space for people to make those choices for themselves.

It’s never too late to choose each other again. ✨

To rebuild what’s been strained.

To grow together, not just alongside each other.

To deepen your intimacy.

To book the trip you’ve both been dreaming about.

To create space for emotional wellness.

To slow down, reconnect, and remember what brought you together in the first place.

To fall in love all over again.

Because sometimes, reconnecting doesn’t require a new relationship…it requires making room for the one you already have.

Your next chapter can start anywhere. ✨

Traveling together doesn’t automatically mean you’re connecting.

You can spend an entire week side by side and still feel like you barely connected.

Between airports, reservations, activities, different energy levels, phones, work, and packed itineraries, a trip can start to feel more like a project to manage than an experience to share.

That’s why staying connected while you travel deserves intention.

A few simple rituals can help: checking in before the day begins, creating one moment that belongs just to the two of you, and taking a few minutes at night to talk about what you loved, noticed, or want to remember.

The intention is to experience the destination while also experiencing each other. 🌙

When you’re ready to make that connection part of the getaway itself, IntimacyMoons can help you find the perfect setting. From sailing the Caribbean to an all-inclusive escape in Antigua, a luxurious stay in the Bahamas, or a week in Jamaica, we’re creating travel experiences where the destination is just part of the story.

Save this as a reminder for your next getaway, and visit IntimacyMoons.com for more info on our retreats.

We can become so practiced at compartmentalizing the parts of our lives that hurt that we forget we’ve also created walls around the parts that bring us joy.

The truth is, we cannot numb selectively. When we disconnect from pain, we can also become less available for pleasure, trust, presence, rest and intimacy.

Being more integrated means allowing ourselves to feel the full range of what it means to be human, without deciding that certain emotions are too much or too painful to experience. 🖤

What might become possible if you stopped separating your joy from your pain?

Save this as a reminder to come back to yourself, and share it with someone who may need permission to feel more fully. ✨
