The future of the arts cannot be built alone.

In a sector facing growing pressures and shrinking resources, collaboration is more important than ever. But working together means more than forming partnerships, it means recognising what each of us brings to the table, sharing responsibility and ensuring everyone benefits.

@lisa_richards_toney, President and CEO of the Association of Performing Arts Professionals @apap365, makes a compelling case for unlearning the silo and looking beyond our own institutions to shape a stronger future for the arts.

As APAP celebrates its 70th anniversary at APAP|NYC 2027, under the theme Welcoming the New, Becoming the Next, there is an opportunity to reflect on how we connect, collaborate and move the sector forward.

What are the most pressing questions facing the performing arts sector right now? From economic shifts to immersive tech, culture is rapidly evolving.

To navigate these changes, over 300 global performing arts leaders, cultural practitioners, and artists from nearly 70 cities have gathered in Hong Kong this week. Hosted for the first time by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, the Association of Asia Pacific Performing Arts Centres (AAPPAC) 2026 Annual Conference is currently underway at @westk.hk, running from 6 to 9 October.

Coinciding with AAPPAC’s milestone 30th anniversary, this year’s conference is anchored by a timely theme: The Next Act: Shaping the Future. The event’s four panel discussions bring together leading voices from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond to explore the challenges, opportunities and changes shaping the sector.

Panel 1 - From Survival to Strategy
How can performing arts organisations respond to financial pressures and changing audiences while building for the future? A conversation on funding, governance, partnerships and leadership.

Panel 2 - Disrupt or Disappear?
Technology is changing how audiences experience culture. This panel looks at innovation in the live arts, from immersive technology and mixed-media practice to new ways of reaching audiences.

Panel 3 - Programming the Future
How can programming evolve with changing audiences and communities? Artists, producers and curators will explore new ideas, interdisciplinary work and approaches that challenge traditional formats.

Panel 4 - The Future of Performing Arts Centres
As AAPPAC marks its 30th anniversary, this panel looks back at three decades of the Association while considering what the next generation of performing arts centres will need.

Beyond the panels, the conference features inspiring keynote addresses and breakout sessions. For delegates, the event also offers a rare glimpse into the future of Hong Kong's own cultural infrastructure. Delegates are being invited to an exclusive guided preview of the highly anticipated @westkperformingarts Centre—WestK’s largest performance venue—ahead of its official grand opening in 2027. by @intl_arts_manager

From 6-9 October 2026, over 200 global performing arts leaders will gather at WestK in Hong Kong for the AAPPAC Annual Conference, hosted by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA).

As one of the world's largest and most ambitious cultural hubs, WestK stands as Hong Kong’s premier cultural tourism landmark. This year’s event is particularly momentous, as it marks both the 30th anniversary of the Association and the first time WestK has hosted the conference.

Under the theme ā€œThe Next Act: Shaping the Futureā€, the four-day conference will explore the issues shaping the sector, from funding and governance and technological change to new approaches to programming and the future of performing arts centres.

The programme features nearly 30 speakers and moderators, highlighted by keynotes from Leon Ko, Amrita Hepi and Huang Ruo, alongside panels bringing together leaders from organisations including Sydney Opera House, Factory International, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and WKCDA.

Beyond the discussions, delegates will also experience Hong Kong’s creative scene through showcases presented by @westkperformingarts , opportunities to connect with peers. Attendees will also enjoy an exclusive preview of the WestK Performing Arts Centre (WestK PAC), ahead of its highly anticipated opening in 2027. As one of three major performing arts landmarks within the district, WestK PAC is envisioned as a flagship venue for dance and theatre in Asia, serving as a dynamic, multi-cultural platform for international exchange.

Join AAPPAC 2026 in Hong Kong from 6-9 October and be part of the conversation shaping the future of the performing arts.

Ā£208 million. That’s the estimated economic cost of post-Brexit touring barriers for the UK creative sector.

New DCMS-commissioned research estimates that touring barriers resulted in £208 million in lost UK GVA and 2,490 full-time equivalent jobs between 2022 and 2024.

UK music artists’ touring across the EU remains 21% below 2019 levels, with smaller and mid-scale touring particularly affected. And the impact reaches far beyond the UK. Reduced touring by UK musicians is estimated to have resulted in around Ā£1.04 billion in lost GVA across EU host countries.

From visas and the 90/180-day Schengen rule to customs, haulage and tax requirements, the report highlights the practical barriers making international touring more costly and complex.

Touring is not only an economic activity, it is also an important part of cultural exchange, connecting artists and audiences across borders.

What happens when young people stop being audiences, and start becoming part of the cultural institution?

At Communicating the Arts 2026, taking place in Ottawa–Gatineau from the 13th to the 16th of October, Jillian Barker of the Royal Ballet and Opera and Guillemette Naessens of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon will share two different approaches to engaging younger audiences. From creating with 2,500 children in Bradford to giving students a real role in museum life.

Both projects put young people at the centre. What can cultural organisations learn when they give them a more active role?

International Arts Manager readers also can get 50% off tickets with code IAM50.
