Meet Araneus diadematus: the name means "wearing a diadem". 🕷️🕸️

Invert your perspective. Come closer. 🕷️🌿

Spider, harvestman, and a lot of crawling through the bushes.
Both were surprisingly relaxed and let me get close.

Two eight-legged neighbours, but not the same animal: the European garden spider (Araneus diadematus) spins silk and hunts in her orb web. The harvestman (order Opiliones) is not a spider at all: no silk, no venom, one fused body instead of two.

💡 Garden spider: In 1973, two of them flew to NASA's Skylab and still managed to build webs in zero gravity.

💡 Harvestman: It can drop a leg to escape, and the leg keeps twitching on its own for minutes to distract the predator.

🔴 Hi, this is Bernd the firebug (Pyrrhocoris apterus) ⚫

I found Bernd and his friends sunbathing in a hibiscus shrub, and they were incredibly patient with me. No running, no drama, just a bug with a very serious face.

💡 Fun fact: Firebugs helped scientists discover the X chromosome in 1891.

📍 Local: With over 1,600 reports, the firebug is the most reported true bug in Austria on iNaturalist. Bernd is basically a local celebrity.

🐝 Polistes dominula 🌼🪽

Back in the garden, trying macro background cards for the very first time. Keeping the card in place while hoping the wasp would stay put turned out to be harder than expected, but my model was wonderfully patient and let me take a few shots 🙂 Sharpness could still be better, but I wanted to share the progress.

💡 Fun fact: Paper wasps build a single open comb from chewed plant fibres and saliva, with no protective envelope. And unlike their cousins, they won't crash your coffee table.

📍 Local: In a 1990s survey of Innsbruck's Botanical Garden, this was by far the most frequently recorded paper wasp. One even built its nest on a sunny wall there.

🐝 Apis mellifera 🌿✨ The Honey Bee.

My first time shooting bees in the garden —
and honestly, I was not prepared for how hard
it is to keep up with them. They never stop.
But getting close changes everything.
Under the lens, they're not just busy —
they're almost fluffy. That caught me completely
off guard.
